Adding a second cigarette/cigar lighter socket for phone/tablet charging

Featured Replies

I'm new here and I did do a bit of a search on this but didn't see anything but my apologies if there's already a thread somewhere on this.

I'd like to add a second lighter socket to my Octavia.

It seems USB2 draws a maximum of 0.5A and the fuse for the lighter is 15A so I *think* I should be safe charging four devices from the same feed so I'm imagining that I'll buy another socket (like this one - http://goo.gl/oV7boq ) and then run that in parallel off of the existing socket in the center console.

Oh, I've got a couple of these - http://goo.gl/adgPCJ - to plug in.

So... good idea? Terrible idea?

If it's not a bad idea can anyone suggest how I might temporarily remove the existing lighter socket to get at the connections? It's easy enough to reach, being right beside the gear stick boot.

That's pretty much what I did, though I was fitting the centre section itself also at the time, so access was easier for me to start with.

Here's how I did it: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/203322-fitting-an-additional-12v-socket-inside-a-jumbo-box/?&p=2440220#entry2440220

Thanks Chris, that's fantastic. I was actually thinking about added the centre armrest myself so I'll keep your posts in mind for the future.

I fitted a charger for my phone by using a piggyback fuse in the main fusebox, then a spare cigarette lighter socket which I mounted by the fuse box.  Then ran a micro USB charger lead from there behind the dash to exit at the mini flip up box above the stereo: Means I can charge my phone while mounted in a Brodit clip and works an absolute treat.
