Retrofit OEM Xenon's - Straight Swap?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm a newbie member (this is my 1st post in fact) and awaiting delivery of my new Octavia 3 Elegance estate, 2.0 150PS DSG estate.

For reasons I wont bother to explain,I couldn't wait for the car to be built to my exact spec, so picked one from stock, as close to my desired spec as I could find. (there aint many!)

I really wanted xenons, but none were available at the time on stock cars.

Can I simply purchase a new set of complete xenon units and swap them out? or is the wiring different? My car has the standard Intelligent Light Assist. Will this work ok too?

The dealer unhelpfully just said that "options could not be dealer fitter" Cheers! :-(

All thoughts greatly received.

Pete

You'll also need a new bumper with washers and the wiring is likely to be be different. I suspect you'd be knocking on for a couple of grand for the swap....

It also requires the levelling sensors in the rear suspension, I believe, so is a very expensive retrofit. I don't believe you'll be able to adjust the height using the standard controls and that is an MOT fail (rejection reason 2 here: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_170.htm)

Thanks chaps. I thought I couldn't be that simple. Although, being an Elegance, it already has headlight wash.

Do you mean the lamp units are different external dimensions than the standard?

And levelling sensors, didn't know that either. does sound like an expensive swap.

I will just have to live with the compromise I suppose

Likely also need a new bcm module. Not sure if that would fall foul of the locked module issue that prevents some upgrades on the MQB platform.

In most cases there is a level sensor on the front and rear suspension. That's certainly the case on the Mk.2 and 3T Superb.

The headlight fittings will be the same physical dimensions but the 'guts' of the fittings will be different; Bi xenon shutters, self levelling and adaptive mechanisms, ballast/ignitor assemblies etc etc.

Very expensive job - if even technically possible in the first place.

Elegance does away with xenons in place of other useful trinkets which is a bit of a shame but have found the intelligent light assist does go some way to make up for it. Works quite well and its not like you are short of light output with the halogens when on main beam; more than adequate.

Im a bit of a tight ass but wasnt going to pay over a grand for xenon lights dont know about you.

I agree, the extra grand was to strong for me to. They do look the nuts, but after nearly 9 months of ownership I have still not driven at night time, so would of been waste of money!!
