What made you pick your current car?

Featured Replies

Were you at all worried it wouldn't live upto your expectations?

Anyone else thought "if I buy this car -what are the chances of a better one showing up next week?"

Cos it's got the word " Skoda " on it

The End

Boot space.

Going through this just now. Lease on Superb is finished in three weeks, when I downsize to a Fiesta....worried now I will find it too small, however I remember three years ago being worried in case the Superb was too big to drive/park etc

Sure everything will be fine

Have everyone's cars lived upto your expectations?? Worried you picked the wrong one!!??

when i bought the car i knew it was good because its a skoda

good review, good economy and local dealer.

Because it handles well, is more refined and better spec'd and faster than the cars it replaced (series of VAG stuff). Can return a genuine 60+ mpg if you try too.

Golf- Kids were growing up and i'd wanted a mk2 since I did my work experience at Volkswagen. Found one boasting throttlebodies instead of fuel injection and yes, it lives up to the billing :D

Passat- Had no worries about this one, roomy and reliable. With the 170 CR its pretty nippy too though it doesn't give much in the way of feel but when you're hauling three kids, two dogs and a wife that doesn't like going over 34 mph it doesn't matter so much. Dealer was also spot on, friendly, helpful and in no way pushy.

Arosa- Needed something small and strong but with power steering for the eldest. There was no way I was meeting the prices of dreamers flogging Lupos so ended up with this. One owner, low mileage and well cared for.

Octavia- I'd advised a friend at work on buying this car several years ago and the second he mentioned he was selling it I snapped it up. High mileage but well cared for and a new turbo fitted at 120k. Couldn't be passed up so (with a severe scowl from SWMBO) it came home with me.

Cars are such that invariably whilst one is under your stewardship another will come along that flicks a switch. But there's always time and i've enough knowledge to know pretty much what i'm buying.

Until it snows.

I wanted it the moment I turned the key. It was comfortable, good looking, pretty fancy and by the time I let that engine loose on the roads, I was completely in love.

Its not the biggest, the most powerful, or the best sounding engine. But it has a character matched by no other engine I've seen. It has power everywhere, no matter what rpm you're on. It roars like a beast. Its got just enough torque to make it fun to drive, but not crap you pants. And it's legally allowed to pull 1800kg.

Basically the insurance was a lot less, the old 206 was £4300 and something with a stupid black box in it and the Fabia was only £1300 without a stupid black box, what I got back from the old insurance paid for the new policy.

Also the car wasn't that dear and it was 9 1/2 years younger.

Do I regret buying this specific car? Well, sort of. I had air con in the pug and this doesn't have it so it would have been nice for summer, I wish I got one with MDI so I could change songs whilst driving. Plus where I work is on a log hill, so I have to push it to get it to go on the way back home which I don't like doing as whilst it's cold so I wish I'd checked some more reg plates on Gocompare to see what engines I could have gone for.

but all in all it's a great car.

The reasons I bought my current car,

* I had a budget of £2k

* It was the best balance between fun, reliability, running costs & practicality,

* The reviews were all positive from the motoring press & owners,

* I wanted to own something a bit different  - most people don't have a clue what it is,

* It needs to be able to bring a smile to my face on my early Sunday morning blasts over t''moors

As for expectations, it's even better than I had hoped.  It covers ground far quicker than it should when you look at the figures.  It handles better than I had hoped for and despite giving it bean most days, I'm getting 38mpg average!  It's been referred to as Postman Pat's Plastic Spaz Wagon but having lived with a Skoda badge before I can handle the jibes.

Do I regret buying it?  Not really.  Cheaper versions have cropped up since getting mine but at the time it was the best I could find so overall I'm a happy camper. :)

My dealer offered me a deal(by phone) I couldn't refuse, on a car I wanted - end of!

Besk I could afford with the budget I had. Still got it after nearly 7yr so I suppose that says something.........still got no money :bandit:

Nah it's been a very good motor. Can't see what I would replace it with with what I can afford now.

In the last 10 years I have bought 3 cars. Each car I keep for 5 years and my budget has been about 8 to 9 grand.

I like to get one nearly new so i dont have to worrie about mot, s for a couple of years and so that i get a warrenty.

The fist car was a 6 month old astra 52 plate 1.4 petrol was a good car and in thd 5 years i had it all i was needing was 4 new tyres and new brake bads. I then swaped it for a 57 plate astra 8 months old 1.4 petrol same again as the first one just new tyres and brakes. My wife still has this car so for my 3rd car i was wanting to try a diesel as I do around 15000 miles a year.

For my budget the best astra i could get was a 3 year old with 20000 miles on the clock. So i had a look at some other cars vw golf 58 plate 70000 miles for 8500 pounds crazy money. I ended up getting a 62 plate fabia 1.6 tdi 9 month old when i bought it with only 5400 miles on the clock got the price down to 8100. Hopefully it will be just as good as the astra, s iv had it is faster cheaper on fuel and road tax is only 20 pounds a year.

Until it snows.

Then it drifts too ;)

It was OK last year, amazingly though, and now it's on winter tyres it should be fine - I hope! Not that we get much snow here.

Because the Skoda phenomenon was still mostly a secret - a cheap VW with a Skoda badge on the bonnet.

Those days are gone, too many of you have followed suit.

Skoda's are no longer the bargain they once were.

After three Skoda's I reckon I'm on my last.

What would you get next silver1011?

Scene as I started this I guess I better put mine up.

Mk2 golf GTi 8v - bought as a project. Car to tidy & flip for profit. Put a smile on my face that was too addictive so kept it!! Just got it back from the bodyshop after getting the rust sorted - now £450 lighter (along with the other £1200 we have spent on electrics and mechanical parts)

Mk5 jetta - had a mk1 Fabia Vrs, a vw Touran and a mk3 polo GT. Needed a car what was big enough for the family (at the time), handled wells and went even better. It ticked all the boxes and didn't break the bank like the equivalent golf!!

Now family is bigger, baby on the way & dog is no longer a puppy. Superb is a my next car - nobody has any around near me, I've not seen many modded ones & the insurance is a good chunk cheaper

What would you get next silver1011?

Not too sure, I was thinking something Korean but they aren't particularly cheap anymore either!

Well, we've as a family have had 4 before and the wife said I couldn't have the 64 Octavia combi I wanted so I thought I wolud choose the most ridiculous little Skoda I could find, thinking she would say no to spending 15k instead of 5k. It kinda backfired I I got my Monte Carlo!

Jan 2nd 2004 - I stuffed my fabia on to its roof spectacularly and it held together so well I got another within 1 month of the insurance being sorted out.  And I still have it now.

My previous family wagon was costing me 300 quid a month on fuel to get to work and back, and another nearly 300 a year to tax. The octy ticked the boxes of great economy, reasonable tax, reliable, and still plenty of room to get kids in the back, prams in the boot etc. Halved my fuel and road tax bills overnight.
