DPF is doing my head in

This is the second time my DPF is playing up. Once again, the dashboard warning light came up, I drove in third gear at 3k rpm for over 30 miles at constant speed, and now the flashing glow plug is on and engine in limp mode. This happened last month and I had to get an indy garage run a forced regeneration. 

 

I have only been using Esso, using premium diesel every fourth fill up and all my driving is on motorways with a heavy right foot.

 

Why is my DPF clogging up so quickly? Or at 107k miles, is it time for the inevitable?

DPF's do have a limit on soot capacity of 60g maximum, garage should of able to check the ECU to check your soot reading. But also could be the DPF diff pressure sensor on its way out, easy to replace but needs to be adapted to the ECU (need VCDS).

You need to read the fault code, as above there are quite a few sensors on the DPF that can play up. If these break then the DPF won't be able to perform a regeneration.

 

At 107,000 miles the DPF (depending on how those 107K miles have been) may be nearing the end of its life.

 

Get it to Shark, gut the internals together with a remap and all will be well, including passing MOT's.

I would say that the pressure sensor is knackered.

 

That is exact same thing happened when mine went.

Paul (Aubrey on Brisky) was kind enough to run the forced regen this evening. Was at 61% ....... came down to 5.4% when it was all done.

The only fault code was:

18434/P2002/008194 - Particle Filter Bank 1: Malfunction

Possible Symptoms

Malfunction Indication Lamp (MIL) active

Exhaust Pressure Sensor (G450) faulty

Special Notes

Skoda Superb (3U) & VW Passat (3B) (Engine Codes: BGW, BSS, BWW) had issues with faulty Exhaust Pressure Sensors (G450), they were defective from factory and due to a leaking sealing the measured values were incorrect and resultet in wrong calculated particle filter load and unsuccessful regeneration cycles.

Will replacing that sensor need VCDS to recode? If so, I might as well buy a subscription given that I'm keeping this Octy till it dies.

I considered gutting the DPF, but was worried about the new MOT regulations.

Did Paul have a look at the soot loading (measuring block 068 IIRC) following the regen?

Thanks for the instructions about the sensor, I will get that sorted as soon as possible.

I'm afraid Paul didn't as it was a little learning curve for the both of us. Plus I was running late for my night shift, so I didn't get a chance to google around to see what else to check.

It would be worth getting the ash content checked. Unlike the soot, which is measured in %, ash is measured in grams and the maximum is 60g.

I have come across several companies which offer cleaning services. Can't remember any names but Honest John suggested one. I think one charged about £300 for the actual cleaning but you had to get the filter out of the car and back in afterwards.

bite the bullet and ditch the dpf, i contemplated doing sensors but didnt wanna run the risk of a couple of months down the line having more sensor / dpf issues so I went to shark and had it gutted. passed recent MOT (by the book not a dodgy one) and visualy all is standard. better mpg and you can drive like a nun without worrying about clogging it up!

and then when you do wanna give it some beans, you can cover the prat in the convertible who's up your ar*e in a cloud of soot!

DPF auto regenerate came up today. This is 150 motorway miles after Paul got the soot down to 5% via forced regen. So that means the soot % must have gone up to 40% so quickly. Luckily, 20 miles of keeping at 3k rpm has done the trick...for now.

 

Could there be something else in the engine causing exhaust gases to be more sooty than usual?

An apparantly effective treatment is to take the DPF off the car and blast it through with water using a domestic pressure washer. AFAIK that's basically all these DPF cleaning companies do, but when carrying this out on a commercial scale they have pay quite a bit to dispose of the gunge that comes out as it's technically classed as toxic waste.

Still worth checking the G450 sensor. I believe from other posts that if the DPF is removed, the pressure sensor is still required to give a signal, even though the regen cycle is programmed out. I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong.

I put some of the Tunap injector cleaner (there were two different bottles) with my current tank of diesel. I was advised to use another bottle after 4000 miles and change the fuel filter. So far, no automatic regeneration light has come up and I'm halfway through the tank.

I might have to do just that.

I thought the optimum revs for regen was around 2000rpm. Try that and see if its any better.

You're probably right....it's just when Paul did the forced regen, the soot % came down fastest at around 3k...so that's why I presumed that was the optimum range.

Do you have a remap already?

I haven't remapped it, nor did the previous owner of two years. No paperwork to support a remap. Although the master technician at Audi specialist in Burwell thought it was more Powerful than the normal VRS, so he was convinced it had been remapped.

My 140PD scout is in for service and cambelt on Mon, out of interest ill be asking them to read off the ash content of the DPF. Ive only done 22K miles but a lot of that has been short journeys to work.

Can anyone confirm that the max ash is 60g for the 140pd.
