The biggest problem with a diesel performance car, is that just as it's getting fun, it's time to change up a gear.

As for F1, sure, it's not the same as a V8 and the wastegate noise is interesting, however I think you've forgotten the most important thing.

It's now a 1.6L v6, somebody has to shoehorn one into a clio :)

If it's a Clio Williams it's got the Merc Engine, otherwise if it's a plain cup, then it's the renault power plant.

Isn't that part of the package as a driver, changing up but, more importantly, knowing when to change up to get the most out of the engine.

Lots of people like tractors :hi:

Lots of people like getting in fights after a few too many at the pub as well, doesn't mean it's right :p.

Yeah and I have pretty much always driven a derv, however you soon run out of gears or are into 6th.

Sure you can have some fantastic drives if you avoid 6th and yes, you'd be pushing things if you took it all the way in the gears in either form of car.

Don't get me wrong, the Octy has Bigger brakes and B12 and handles fantastically.

While I can quite happily dispatch other cars on the road with minimal effort I still wouldn't say it's in the league of performance car.

Nice sleeper/cruiser though :)

I certainly wouldn't put a derv in a caterham...

Audi lemont?

Do you mean Le Mans ?

Yes, sorry, I posted it on my iPod and I can't use the stupid keyboard on it very well, and hate its auto correct.

I agree that all diesels are slow and smelly just like this old tractor.audir18-2.jpg

Thank you sir, my point exactly.

DPF delete on that?

You eaten your socks yet Lee?

All proper cars are petrol powered, I can't imagine a diesel engine sounding as good as a V8 petrol at high revs.

it came about after a post on the Brisky FB page, I was also slightly inebriated at the time. And then FUBAR decided to quote a post from FB made by said slightly inebriated person. I wasn't far off though, six hours or so :D

It wasn't meant to be contoversial though, just a discussion on why diesels can't be performance cars ;)

FTFY

Porsche sell diesels

And so do Maserati now.

People have mentioned Les Mans cars, but there was of course the Audi R8 TDI which was pretty quick,

Westfield did that a few years ago!

Haha, I suggest not using ebay when your drunk then... I've bought loads of cool stuff when I've been 3 sheets to the wind, I bought a 8 foot plastic elephant from a guy in Oxford, I think I was still hungover when I turned up to collect it.

Wasn't it called the Weasel.

It did 0-60 in around 6 seconds and returned 60mpg.  I think it originally had a 1.9 Sierra diesel in it.

A DSG box or similar gets rid of that problem though, with near seemless gear changes.

And before somebody says 'yes but thats auto' alot of the performance cars now are autos arent they. Nissan GTR, Ferraris and the rest of em

:).

Diesel is good. No, brilliant in fact more than good enough to win GT endurance races. 170 CR is a belting engine surges along and shames quite a lot it comes up against. The 185 3 series and 626 do the same and the VAG V10/V12 TDI sounds pretty good when given boot. In gear acceleration makes all the difference when on the road and a diesel can make all the difference. I don't think its there yet but it won't be long before we start seeing high-end performance cars drinking something a bit different. R8 already has it and others have mentioned Porsche and Maserati.

Is this a performance car?

It performed pretty well yesterday, 1st in class and 3rd overall out of over 40 cars. Watch video and judge for yourself. Touching the grass on the quickest bit was entertaining :D

Great now im on youtube. thanks..

I know it's relatively off topic and I know they aren't 'that quick' but that got to be one of the best sounding engines ever made. long live the B16b.

Best sounding rep mobile?
