corroded Skoda badge

Featured Replies

Having priced them up I think I'll wait for the next sale. I don't really want to spend £70-odd on a set of badges

Ford suffer similar issues with their badges. One company (DMB Graphics) came up with a range if gel overlays to fit over the top of the original badge and cover the unsightly mess. Plus they can supply different colours and designs.

I am sure there is enough white worn sufferers out there with the old badges to make an approach to DMB a worthwhile exercise - see if they will offer a range for Skoda badge sufferers?

I would offer to approach then myself however I have a fl yeti so am more than happy with the new badge design.

Lots of manufacturers have made badges like this in recent years.

I've posted before the reason why they are c**p, but nobody seems to believe what I said. I've only been an industrial chemist for 38 years -  but never mind.

There is no delamination or anything like that. The badges are made from sheet aluminium which are anodised. This is basically a chemically induced dye system which is pretty much corrosion proof. The problem is when they cut the treated product to it's final shape, and the "raw" aluminium edges are exposed to corrosion, which creeps under the anodised "skin", giving they sign of "white worm" .

Badge manufactures must have realised the game was up in making cheap signs, and moved to vacuum deposited aluminium coated plastic signs. These are basically inert, and so will hopefully last a lot longer.

Minor rant over :nerd:

When I had my badges replaced I was told if they go  again they won't be covered on warranty. so I sealed them in with clear mastic so the weather won't get in, no problems so far after

18 months. D.O.B of my Yeti 01-01-2012.

What rubbish all the time your Yeti is in warranty they should keep replacing them, some dealers need to get their act together.

After reading this topic rang the dealer(Bickerton Skoda) as my rear badge is showing signs of worm. They want to see the car onThursday before they will replace under the warrantry. Will post the verdict.

I had mine replaced under warranty at my last service.

Had mine replaced at the first service a couple of years ago although it was perfectly okay at that time, the replacement is now wormy. Couldn't really see the point of replacing the original with one that obviously was going to have the same unresolved issue, I suppose it was to make sure the car was out of warranty before it succumbed again! :dull:

I wonder if Skoda would replace the wormy ones with new black and silver wormproof ones on request?

Prospect Letchworth replaced mine with the new style and didn't charge me at first service. I hadn't complained of "worm" just wanted one!

Since seeing your topic went into Skoda dealer as my tailgate badge looks ropey. Fitting a new one under the warranty next week.

Be aware that the problem also affects the front badge and the wheel centres so keep an eye on them.

Fred

Had my first service done today and had my rear tailgate badge replaced under warranty at the same time. Picked the car up all washed when I arrived and ready to go they explained everything about what they had done all very impressive so I paid and left. Got home and parked up then noticed about 1 cm to the right of the badge a protrusion in the paintwork what looks like a screwdriver has pushed the panel from the other side! Took the car straight back but the service people had just gone home. The girl on reception said she would leave them a message for Monday. Wish I had left the badge as it was now as I have got the hassle of getting it sorted. So if anyone else is thinking of having the badges replaced check the job before you leave the dealer.
