Wrong fuel consumption readings - Octavia 1.9TDI Mk1

Featured Replies

My trip computer is reading the average fuel consumption wrong,

for example, one moment it shows 6.7 l/100km , and the other 2.4 l/100km,

and so on...

I hooked it up to VAG-COM, and it didn't show any errors,

also I reseted the board computer.

It didn't help.

Have you any advice on how to fix this?

Are you sure you are looking at the average and not the instantaneous?

Is it switching between MFA1 and MFA2 (is shown in the display)? It is controlled by the button under the stalk.

Is this happening as you are driving?

It's average, I'm sure.

It's happening while I'm driving.

It's not swiching between MFA1 and MFA2,

but I noticed that it's only happening in

MFA1, and works normally in MFA2.

When it happens, does the number of miles/km reset?

How many miles/km between problems?

Sounds like its on instantaneous. Try scrolling through the options when on MFA1.

It's average, I know how to use my car. :D

Everything is normal with the KM.

It just started this morning, and it's the same now.

I've driven about 15KM.

You know that the average will reset under certain conditions.

Can you confirm that, when you cycle through the options using the switch on the end of the stalk, the time, distance, average speed are all OK and it is only the km/l that has 'gone wrong'?

Yes, everything is normal when I cycle trough the options.

Maybe the best way to describe the problem is that the average

fuel consumption is behaving like the instantaneus fuel consumption.

But only on MFA1.

Well,

I left the car alone for a few hours,

after that I've driven it for about 100 Km, and the problem was gone,

now it works as it should.

If you have any ideas on what went wrong, please write down your theory. :)

The average probably reset back to 0.00mpg due to inactivity of the engine. Think mine resets after 2 hours?

If your checking your average shortly after restarting the engine it will probably act like the instantous because it has so little data.. If that makes sense
