Mike, the plastic is not trying to protect the fins. They are only there to catch air for the cooling bars which the plastic is covering.

Waste of money either way.

The genuine Mike. The Diy is far superior. If the skoda part was that good, dealers would be recommending them surely.

Can only speak for myself, but never had any of the three dealers I've used mention them.

But had the last dealer comment on my mesh protection and how good an idea it is, after my new condenser was fitted. It's the one thing I'd recommend to anyone who is thinking of buying a skoda.

Totally agree Mike 're logic behind not promoting the genuine part. More and more are catching onto the mesh though.

Mentioned to SWMBO about mesh behind the bumper grill to protect the condenser. As having a new one fitted was told it was chavy!!

Chavy? Sounds a very snobbish comment from someone who clearly has plenty of cash. No disrespect.

Exactly. I said to her that's fine. But you won't see it and it will save me money in the future

I bought one of the 'protectors' a couple of months ago after having my aircon regassed (had lost 100g of refridgerant from new) at it's MOT time and noticed how much road rash the rad had. I've got the superskoda grills fitted to my car so the honeycomb openings on that lessens the chances of stones getting through more than the original straight line grill. Then I cable tied the protector directly behind the grill rather than clip it to the rad. Least that way it's a few inches away and anything getting through the grill/protector at least has a chance to be deflected/slowed before getting to the rad. As it is though I was quite surprised how large the openings were on the protector and how little good it would actually be fitted straight on the rad.

But why design something to benefit the customer. We all know manufacturers do this to get us too spend money to fix it

Do other car manufactures have the same problems with condenser getting holed? My partners Citroen c4 has a large open grill and looking at some cars where I work, the bmws have larger gaps than my Octavia. It seems very common to have them designed this way.

My Subaru and others I have seen have a large hole under the crash bar with no grille whatsoever. I fitted the mesh within a couple of days of getting it. I'd hate to see how many condensers have had to be replaced in them.

I fitted a full height mesh, sprayed black with some paint found in shed!

Cost of mesh around 4 quid IIRC.

Now my compressor is being changed I must remember to TELL the dealer to refit it!

They have already made a hash of fitting new compressor, as they now have a leak and need to restrip down to check!

Why has the condenser failed Such? Worrying to hear of a failure with mesh fitted -- or was it corrosion, and nothing to do with stone damage?

Mike

The compressor was diagnosed faulty way back in June, and was booked in twice now for repair, first time they checked gas and told me it had too much in! So they took some out and said they will not change compressor as that may be the cause of the problem!

Anyway, after no change, second visit booked, and then after having car all day was told they had not changed compressor as a new pipe was required due to corrosion, so need to replace both together.

Waited until outcome of discussions with SUK re seat wear and warranty claim before rebooking! which was Friday last week!

They changed compressor and then was unable to regas, as there is now a leak somewhere!

Did not get car back as they now need to restrip and find leak.

The condenser is fine afaik, I think they may have caused the leak themselves when changing compressor!

As you can imagine, I'm not impressed!

Unlikely to get my car back until tmrw!

My eldest came up yesterday in his 'Y' reg mk1 VRS and as I checked his oil (he's a lazy sod and know he wont be checking) I had a look at the aircon rad and it looks spotless. Looking at the lower grill it's quite a small cross hatch design on the mk1 vrs and this obviously does a good job of keeping nasties away.

Any chance of sticking a few pics up so I can see what exactly you're protecting and where it is?

Nobody?? :(

Looks good, but how is that attached can't see any cable ties?

If you look very closely you can see small cable ties from b&q. 18 in total.

Perfect - more than adequate to do the job. Did you buy it in black or have you sprayed it? Looks great no matter what.

Looking at the difference in size between the mesh you've put in and the actual grille, it is so patently obviously just how vulnerable to stone ingress this area is.

Mike

I bought this in black from A link from this site from eBay.

Got a large sheet today from Wickes, Only £3.99, Think it's galvanized too, Had a look in B&Q but their mesh was the big gauge type, Could have got a brick through it  :D
