What should I do?

Featured Replies

After ordering a TDI VRS estate in early December I've been told that it won't be being built until the end of August.

This has led me to look at other models as an alternative, so what should I do

I've tried and had a provisional deal agreed on a Mazda 6 Sport at the same cost as the VRS.

My dealer in response to this has offered me a trial in an Elegance Superb as the specs are virtually the same.

Do I

- Stick with my VRS order in the hope it arrives quicker

- Go with a different model if so which one - are there any more I should consider?

I feel your pain, as do many others on this forum I guess, although that's one hell of a delay! Any reason for the even longer wait than most?

Does it say on your order paperwork what the estimated delivery date is? My vRS TDI estate has been delayed since mid-March, although thankfully I collect on Friday 2nd May. However since it's original delivery date and its actual delivery date Skoda UK have provided me with a hire car..a VW Passatt estate blue line (gutless engine but thats another story), at no cost to myself. This has solved a few logistical problems in the household! I suppose its whether that would solve a problem for you if you're willing to hold out for your original order.

Also a bit further down this forum is an interesting thread about peoples' Plan B..well worth a read

I'm still without an estimated date for my TDi VRS estate ordered end of November. However if I was now told it would be August I think I will tell Skoda to park it where the sun don't shine when they do eventually build it!

I would be interested to know full spec/options of your VRS.

I've been looking at a Superb as a possible alternative too. Didn't want to go bigger though. But if I could get a good deal on a 4x4 170 DSG I could be turned!

If the VRS is the car you want most, and if you have no urgent need to replace, wait for it.

If other cars are equally desired but have much shorter waits, or if you need to replace your car soon then look elsewhere.

I too looked at the Mazda 6 (and CX-5) before obtaining my VRS Estate. The Mazda is probably the prettier car, has a great diesel engine and has decent spec. For me the Skoda lead on long-term cost of ownership, outright performance (I went for the TSI) and sheer practicality. The finance offers available at the time swung it for Skoda, and I now I have it I am content.

As above ..check out Plan b thread...

Thanks for the replies I've checked out the plan B thread but that's just given me more to choose from!

My thoughts are Is the VRS really going to be worth waiting for or will I resent it by the time it actually arrives?

I waited 5 months for mine and it was worth it. Whether it will be worth it for you depends upon what you expect and the cars you are used to driving.

I rate my VRS as better than than the car it replaced (11-reg 320D) and better than most of my other cars, but it does not have the character and handling of my old 98 & 99 Subarus. Space-wise it is superb, build quality is fine (not BMW but not too shabby), handling and ride are pretty good, and it has enough standard toys to keep me happy. My only slight regret is not ordering DSG, but I never had the choice as my wife flat refuses to drive autos.

Personally, I don't think that they're worth anything like that wait. They're good cars but as the plan b strand confirms, you could be in a better car quicker. Before any massive fan starts trying to establish my location so they can send dog poo through the post, I do like my tdi vrs estate very much indeed. However, they're not perfect.

The fuel tank is far too small, the screen wash tank is also too small meaning those crazy (but legally required) headlight washers empty it very quickly. Once inside, sound insulation isn't great, some of the plastic trim feels very cheap, so too the "leather". In the boot, the floor is a shocking quality, mine has slightly buckled as a result of one reasonably heavy suitcase. The lip is awkward and the variable floor takes up too much room reducing the weight and height of your possible cargo. Economy isn't great, a 280 mile trip on motorways at a steady speed of 70 with very little acceleration or deceleration returns just 51mpg on a car with 4k miles. For me, cruise control, on the odd occasion it decides to work is awkward and counter intuitive. The car lacks some touches that indicate quality such as folding mirrors, aerated water with timed release for the screen wash, gas struts for the bonnet and, for supposedly a family car, child locks on the rear doors which can be operated without the need for a key like I used to have to do in my 1986 Ford Orion.  I also think that the front grill feels very cheap but I understand that I may be in the minority with this.

Having said that, it drives well, is fairly spacious, reasonably quick and corners very well. The price I paid, which was discounted from list price, free serving, good p/x price and 0% with an 8 week wait made it an attractive proposition. If any part of that package wasn't there, I'd probably not have bought one.

Toss a coin - heads = wait for vrs, tails = cancel & get something else.

Always works for me to find out how you really feel with the result of the coin, then make your choice.

I personally wouldnt write off an Elegance spec car myself.

In terms of outright go there really is very little difference between the 150 TDi and 184 TDi, the regular car weighs considerably less so the power advantage of the vRS is somewhat negated.

Also in terms of raw equipment spec the Elegance does better the vRS with its standard Amundsen nav, cruise (though looks as though this will become standard fit on 2015 spec vRS models) and folding mirrors. No xenons for me was not a dead loss and id personally suggest the standard high beam assist counters this loss and is more useful than the lane assist fitted to the vRS.

They look quite ordinary by comparison but its a cheaper (still 0% finance) and nigh on as capable car as an all-rounder; if you must have a sharper drive specifying sports suspension will bring it a little closer to how a vRS drives. Wait for an Elegance whilst increasing is nothing like that for a vRS either.

Id argue that the Superb as good as it is by comparison is a bit old hat compared to the Octavia even after the facelift....slower, thirstier, not as clean, less of the newer tech that is available on the MQB platform and also more expensive...unless you really do need the additional space if say its worth leaving alone. The new Superb will change the goalposts again but its still a way off.

Having read some recent posts of some people giving up on the vRS and ordering A6 Black Editions, C Class AMG sport plus's and BMW's all for v similar monthly costs I have to say a small part of me does still regret perhaps no having shopped around when getting rid of my Mk2 vRS in place of the O3 Elegance but I still think i'd have struggled to get anything like that for the sort of money the Octavia has cost me in terms of down-payment and monthly rental.

For me in certain respects I accept the O3 as the Golf Mk7's slightly less well off relation; 95% of it is the same but there are elements of cost cutting by comparison....but then the car is significantly bigger and more accommodating at less cost so to me its a compromise worth making.

Certainly go and drive the Superb Elegance as they are are much better built than a MKII Octavia.

This is a valid point though as the MBQ does raise the bar with regards to newer tech that is available.... not sure if the build quality and materials have improved as much mind as I have only sat in a few MKIII’s and not driven one.

9 month is a joke though!

Sorry Gizmo not sure if there is some confusion there, comparison entirely with the Mk3 and not Mk2 Octavia; was kust saying really that the Superb facelift hasnt really done much to move its game on; hatch rear end looks are much better though.

I expect there is more attention to detail in how the Superb is bolted together as technically it is in terms of range a more upmarket vehicle, also Id say whilst build quality isnt any worse than a Mk2 Octy, the Mk3 isnt really any better. Small parts of the car do feel a little "tinny" by comparison but I put this down to the rather extreme weight saving compared to the older platform.

The point I was trying to make was the inside of a MKII Superb is much nicer and better quality than the MKII Octavia (no surprises there) so unless the MKIII Octavia has moved on a lot with regards to trim build and the quality of materials used then IMO there is going to be little to separate a MKIII Octavia and a MKII FL Superb.

Granted the MBQ platform used on the MKIII gains more new tech.

That is a joke having to wait that long, I don't suppose you have been given any reason why this is the case?

I don't have a date for my December order either, if I was told I will have to wait till August for it to be built, I would be seriously looking at other makes.

The plan b thread had people going to Merc's, I don't know if you can get those now as the new C class is due out soon if not already.

Jaguar are going to be face lifting the XF & XF Sportbrake in August/September, so there might be deals on the current one, I haven't looked.

One member went for an Audi A6, that's a bit beyond my budget.

The Superb would be worth looking at, I think the estate model looks really good.

No specific reason yet given as to why the long delay so cant say its due the winter pack or another option

I'm going to try a superb estate and see what deal can be had on one of those, as previously said Ive tried and been offered a deal on a Mazda 6 Sport and can have it in probably two weeks not sure on waiting times for superbs at the moment.

Audi, Jag, Volvo, Merc are all mouth watering options but by the time you get the spec to equal the mazda sport or elegance superb as these are nearly like for like (with a few differences) they become out of reach on cost.

I've even looked at Mondeo and Insignia and the mondeo in titanium x sport with a few extras looked nice but due to the lack of a good finance deal was too much on the monthlies and the insignia was a bit opposite good deal as they have 0% at the moment also but I'm just not keen on the look of the insignia

I've thought of VW and Seat but VW arent doing any good finance deals and Seat feels a bit like dumping a girlfriend and going out with her twin sister - as they use the same engines tech etc are the supply problems equal....

I ordered

VRS TDI Estate Manual

Race Blue

Red seat stitching

Sunset glass

Variable Boot Floor

Normal cruise

Winter pack

Spare wheel

Superb's have 0% with 1500 off at the moment but concerned that this will also mean horrendous delays due to lots of orders

Anybody looking for a vrs dsg octavia hb diesel spirit Skoda in Harlow have 2 sitting outside the showroom think for immediate delivery only problem they're both loaded with options taking the OTR price to over £29000

I have to say I am confused by the waiting times for the MK3 VRS'.

I ordered mine on the 23rd of November, and was told a delivery date of late February which was fine. However that got delayed until the end of May. But, I am now picking it up on Tuesday having signed the paperwork yesterday! The wait until August does seem crazy!!

I have the same options as you plus pano roof and electric tailgate. Mine is also DSG and has silver stitching.

The lottery of when the cars are built is the frustration. I was originally quoted BW8, then 18. Now I don't even have an estimate and I'm beginning to think its because they don't want to tell me!

Over £29,000?! That's £5,000 more than what I've paid for mine and the only options I don't remember adding were the sunset glass, say nav and parking assist which don't come to £5,000. Wonder what they have on them.

Audi, Jag, Volvo, Merc are all mouth watering options but by the time you get the spec to equal the mazda sport or elegance superb as these are nearly like for like (with a few differences) they become out of reach on cost.

 .

What spec are you going for on Superb? My spec on 1704x4 estate DSG worked out at ~£33K, with £2K off and 0% worked out £15 a month less than £40K e-class Merc AMG auto estate.

I also thought £29k was way to much but that's what my friend told me was the price in the window of the cars as they had pcp quotes. I wonder if the £29k plus price was the total you'll pay if you do the pcp?

It soon adds up, I was loaned an Elegance estate 1.6 TDI DSG for a weeks demo which with option also came to £29,000. Someone will be getting a very nice spec once it's off the demo fleet.

Back to the original post, if you want a VRs wait for it, if you don't every time you see one you'll wish you had waited.

When I picked up my vRS last week (waited 6 months) the dealer told me that when a new customer wants to order a vRS the expected delivery time is 9 months. This is in Sweden, but I guess it's not much better anywhere else in Europe. I guess the car is really popular and the orders just stack up. The production line is to slim and can't produce the desired amount of vRS cars. Pity!

The dealer contacted today it seems my order has now moved to build week 23 so could have by late June its still a long wait but an improvement from no build week and then late august.

But now I've looked at other options I'm still not sure if I should wait or take another path....
