Active DPF Regenerations : How often is normal?

Featured Replies

My 1.6 TDI has been doing active DPF regenerations roughly twice a day lately. It seems like every time I get out of the car it is running an active DPF regeneration.  I am not getting any DPF warning lights.

I am surprised that the active DPF regenerations are happening so often. I am doing a few 20-40 minute journeys each day in mixed, mostly high speed, traffic. So, I would have thought that the DPF would be getting up to temperature naturally in normal driving, so not need to do active regens so often.

Is this normal or might this indicate a potential DPF related sensor or regeneration procedure problem?

I take it you mean the fans are running when you get out? If so then it's not getting to finish it's regen and will just keep retrying until it does....

The answer that I want to give:

Its probably faulty - best take it back to the dealer and reject the car. Sue them while you are there.

My actual answer (because I learnt to play nicely here):

There is plenty of info on the forum here...have a read through the many many threads available regarding this topic. It sounds perfectly normal and if there is no warning light or other issue, just let it do its thing.

Normally the dpf follows a number of stages. First is passive where it burns off the soot as you drive. The next is the active regen-the symptoms being higher than usual tickover and sometimes a hot burning smell because the dpf is heated up higher than normal to burn the soot off. This can be either triggered by the soot level building up to a predetermined level or reaching approx 700 miles since the last regen. The next is an assisted regen when you get a warning light on the dash and finally there's limp mode and a visit to the dealer to get a forced regen. If you look on skodas website theres a briefing on dpfs and what to do. Covering the miles you do would suggest there's enough time to complete a regen so you probably have a problem with either a sensor or the ecu so a visit to the dealer to get it checked out would be a good idea IMO.

My vRS is the same - its done 4 forced regens since new. The first one was at 68 miles!!!!

I have no lights (DPF or EML) although after a scan it shows up an intermittant DPF pressure sensor fault.

I mainly do motorway miles

If the pressure sensor is faulty (its a common issue on the MK2), then replace it ASAP. An intermittent fault most likely means the ECU is struggling to calculate how much soot is really in the DPF, and this will cause all kinds of issues.

I've spotted my 2.0TDI regenerating three times so far in three thousand miles. Certainly less frequent than my Bravo was doing.

My 1.6 TDI has done one in 1300 miles. I do a 60 mile commute everyday on the 25.
