LPG VRS Smells Of Gas Inside In The Mornings?..

Featured Replies

Hi, my LPG converted Octavia vrs has a strong smell of gas inside in the mornings, am I correct in guessing there is a leak on the tank in the boot?..

Could I test it by lighting a match in the car in the morning? :giggle:  - (I joke, that would be stupid and rather dangerous, and probably wont even help  :| )

The tank is a good place to start, but it could be anywhere on the pipework as well.

Out of interest, how much was the LPG conversion?  Any power gain/loss?  Thanks! :)

well ive got a receipt for £1000, I didn't get it done, I bought the car with the conversion already carried out.. I personally haven't noticed much difference on power, running on gas I was bumper to bumper with a bmw 530, was right on his trumpet all the way. on petrol its obviously a little faster picks up better but unusually it runs smother on LPG for some reason lol :p

Absolutely wicked on LPG, I put £20 in last week (Half a tank) and ive done 95 miles and still got a quarter tank of LPG to go.. so still another 90 miles to go..

Wicked!  I just find the idea of having LPG brilliant - half the price of petrol and the MPG of derv pretty much?  Definitely something I'd consider in the near-ish future.

engine bay: check gas lines, injectors, etc

gas fires can trash your car in matter of seconds

know folks who have lost vehicle to gas fire

ive had and injector pipe pop off twice in the engine bay, luckily didn't catch fire lol

mpg is all on how u drive to be honest, round town I get 15 - 17 but obviously with LPG being cheaper will obviously work out to more miles regardless of the mpg..

Get it checked pronto by a LPGA approved installer. They should have shut off solenoids from the tank forward.

Actually all the installers should have an LPG detector. It is like a pen that you put close to every connection and it makes a buzzer sound if it detects lpg. I have mine checked regularly.

When i had my LPG Subaru - i bought one of those cheap paper gas detectors and put in my car.

Not absolutely sure if they work:

Coz are we talking about burnt gas or natural gas?

I would take your car to have it checked by a UKLPG garage (formerly know LPGA)

Or even another annual lpg service which can be as cheap as £45.

I sometimes think i smell gas - but it seems i was just paranoid.

Or that i was wearing the same clothes that i wore to fill up lpg recently ...

AW - nothing on eBay for LPG detector apart from mains powered ones :-(

Natural gas ones are only £10 and I bought one for my home after I had a gas leak earlier in the year.

U can potentially plug this into an extension socket and trail it into your car?

If you bought it with the LPG installed and you haven't yet had it serviced then you really do need to get it in somewhere for peace of mind.  LPG is a wonderful thing but safety is paramount, bit like not smoking on a petrol station forecourt ;D

but I also know people that have lost cars to Petrol/Cigarette+Interior/Electrical fires.  its a very close call between a petrol tank explosion and an lpg cylinder going pop they both make a mess :D

if your system is properly fitted there is less chance of a lpg tank venting completely as they have a shut off valve to stop this, but if you can smell it in the car in the morning when first opening the doors but not around the car before opening then you may have a small leak that needs to be sorted.

LPG system and tank are made/installed with same safety as normal fuel systems....

Note also the gas is a LIQUID in the tank....

I run an LPG car, the difference between petrol and LPG, a small leak of petrol will drip. LPG is a liquid under pressure that will turn immediately to a gas, and will continue to be forced out of the leak under pressure. It could be something simple, like a leaky joint on a pipe, that just empties the residual gas once the engine is off, or a dodgy fller ?

Wot LPG system u got mate?

My Subaru Legacy 3000cc 242bhp 6cylinder never missed a beat on BRC LPG :-)

You can buy a gas leak detector spray. All gas engineers use it, and all MOT stations should have a can. At work we use one called LD 90. Just spray it on all lines and components, if you've got a leak, it'll bubble up big time!

Just to add, you can potentially run more power with LPG over petrol. With LPG you can in theory run more boost before you get detonation/pinking.

will give it a try do I need to have the car running when using the spray or would it be ok when its off..?

and I did read somewhere that LPG wont make u loose power like everyone claims as its higher octane then petrol is so therefore it makes a bigger bang there fore in theory more power.. but tbh my octy is just as powerful on petrol as it is on LPG..

Only if the car is set up for LPG as the timing can be advanced more on LPG
