Sound Gen in vRS

Featured Replies

For those tsi owners that have unplugged the sound generator, how does the car sound without it?

It's a lot quieter but you can now hear the turbo. Nothing showy. I like it though; you're hearing the engine as it is. I'd *love* my engine to sound like the sweet tunes the generator makes but I couldn't live with it knowing it was fake.

KiDr: yeah, I can hear the sound generator in your video.

  • Assume you're talking about the TDi if you're referring to the fake exhaust tailpipe, so presumably you'd find it more sporty to listen to the "roar" of a diesel engine?  It's a fairly common feature

  • Yeah. Unplugging/disabling the SG is a must do mod IMO. Much better now.

Thank you! Man I think I am deaf then, I cannot hear any difference between eco and sport mode, if you drive like crazy in eco mode it sounds exactly the same for me. It is quieter because it tries to keep revs down.

Embarrassed is probably the wrong word - I'd be more "embarrassed" to drive around in a non-vRS Octavia....

Would that be the "vRS look" cause lets face it, if someone revs up next to yout vRS TDI at the lights....

"Embarrassed" is probably the word that should have been left outta the post really, please excuse me for repeating it, nobody wants to be accused of being "Embarrassed" about their car do they

Has anyone thought of fitting a switch across the wires to the sound gen. Either fit in the car or under bonnet. Mines a petrol dsg so doesn't bother me, also find it quite fun to cruise in eco or normal, then being able to just pull the stick back and be instantly in sport and leave whatever is up my ar*e end behind.

Couldn't resist. Decided to unplug the sound generator to see what difference it makes.

I can now see it does seem quieter inside when driving steadily, I when flooring it you get the true engine sound. But think I may plug it back in for now. Then look at fitting a double pole switch so that gives the same result as pulling the plug out when say on a long drive down a motorway.

Can this generator be heard from outside the car.

No as it's just vibrating the bulkhead, caused rattles in mine so I unplugged it and it's a massive improvement, makes the car feel more grown up.

Disconnected sounds like eco mode. Don't know what the fuss is about it only makes a noise in sport when pulling. Run it in eco and the sound is off. I quite like it in sport though. Another good way to know your are in sport.

The sound generator runs in all three modes.

It can also be heard during normal driving in sport as well. You don't have to be gunning it. Sounding like a Transit van isn't a sound I really like either.

Can't say I notice it myself

Has yours got one?

Yes its a VRS!

Early ones didn't have one though.

Only got it yesterday!

Is that the fact? Then it could be that mine does not have it. I thought all mk3 vrs had one.

Yes very early ones, including the dealer demos didn't have one.

I would like to understand if i have it or not. If i understood correctly it is located near front wipers? How does it look? I have this picture from left side of the car (driver's side in our land:) ), does it look like sound gen?

I can't see it in that photo, if you have one it's mounted right in the centre and looks like this:

Hi

disconnected mine on Saturday, much better and quiet

what a waste of time this sound generator and should have option to turn down in main menu

I thought I was being sensitive not using the word "ashamed" personally...  Merely using the phrasing used earlier in the thread.

I get unplugging it for the TSi but on the diesel?  I'm in the same camp as KidR - I wasn't sure if mine was active until I listened closely.  Anything to drown out the diesel rattle is fine by me!  I just wish there was the option to turn up the generator to play over the top of the stereo....

If I were you I would get your car looked at !

From inside I hear nothing of the rattle when driving, and with the sound malarkey disabled, even when being enthusiastic .... Likely is more noticeable outside.

Why hide what it is and introduce false sounds ? Horses for courses I guess but I like my cars as quiet as possible from in the cabin :)

Well i think my car is missing it, as i could not find it under wipers cover. So will ask dealer to put it in, so that i could switch it off after all:)

It wasn't included on very early vRS TDi's (as per the car I test drove) so may be why it isn't fitted on yours KidR.

I'm still to convince myself I like diesels, although the Skoda has come close to persuading me that diesels are the way forward.  Unfortunately I do 20k miles + a year, so it's the only logical choice, but I do miss the noise and race to the red line.

That said, the much bigger Octavia is saving me money on the running costs at a ratio of 3:2 over my previous Alfa MiTo Cloverleaf, yet there's little difference in the performance.

So if a little box can help fool me into thinking I'm still driving a petrol - even for a split second, when I've got my ears stuffed full of cotton wool and the stereo on full blast - that can only be a good thing in my eyes....

My vrs has been in twice in 2 weeks for the vibration, today it started vibrating so drove straight to the dealer for 8am, they took the car straight in and i went into the workshop to see what was happening.

sun glass unit out, tested, still vibrating

light unit out, tested, still vibrating

took second mechanic out to test and found it was the frame that the sun glass holder bolts into.

A few sticky foam pads and the problem was sorted.

All happy now, and my car is going for its milltek system tomorrow so will probably unplug the sound gen anyway.

I've just got mine today, in Sport mode and I can't hear a sausage. Don't know what everyone is moaning about!! Either mines not working or I'm deaf.
