Sound Gen in vRS

Featured Replies

When I test drove a TDI VRS at the dealers in October 14 (it was registered the week before, so def an MY15) and the sound generator was definitely noticeable in sport mode. I thought the exhaust sounded nice in normal mode, but afterwards learned (on here) that the sound generator also works in normal mode.

Basically, at least in Luxembourg, they are still fitting the sound generator on the TDI VRS.

  • Assume you're talking about the TDi if you're referring to the fake exhaust tailpipe, so presumably you'd find it more sporty to listen to the "roar" of a diesel engine?  It's a fairly common feature

  • Yeah. Unplugging/disabling the SG is a must do mod IMO. Much better now.

  • Hi   disconnected mine on Saturday, much better and quiet   what a waste of time this sound generator and should have option to turn down in main menu

Still don't really get it lol

Does it play like a tone via a external speaker then?

No it creates a vibration which is pushed through the windscreen

When I ordered mine I test drove the diesel and it just sounded like my old Passat so that one must have had no sound gen was back in 2013 though. Not sure how the gen would sound against the diesel background noise

the first builds and demo VRS's didnt have any sound generators in so you wont have heard it :)

I had heard that. Soon I can turn mine off as the wife is getting me vcds For Xmas

Not really, but I don't like fault codes :)

Initial launch spec UK vRS cars (so first batch sent to dealers as demo vehicles etc) didnt have sound generators. I gather they were all on the most part completely standard spec and all also had pictoris alloys.

A few early adopters ended up with such cars and found this out for themselves. Its pretty safe to assume that any UK MY 14 cars onwards (particularly any car witj standard anthracite gemini wheels which were the official standard wheel for the UK market) will have the sound generator.

vRS' were only built from MY14, there are no MY13 so you're incorrect.  I think the case is any customer factory orders should have the SG, mine does, order 5th August '13, delivered October '13.

Sorry Neily yes youre right. Im getting confused that the vRS wasnt around at launch. I meant that early launch cars supplied to dealers for demo/limited dealer stock had the funny spec (no sound gen, pictoris wheels, and more or less no optional extras).

Well I like my SG and i am even thinking of having it turned up to 11 so there!

Best thing I ever did was unplug the Sound Generator - my only regret is driving the first 3000 miles with it on. Dreadful thing, makes it sound like a bag of old nails.

Is there anyone with VCDS or whatever they call it this week/month/year in the Guildford area who can deactivate it please. I really don't like it.

Tonight plugged mine back in after being unplugged for months. Tomorrow will decide if I like it or not. FINAL decision..

could you put yours in a bucket and send it to me so I can add it to mine please?

Are you near a Skoda dealership? They can turn it off in a couple of minutes.

And promptly charge you an hours labour for it too.  :o

Mine was done for free (Benfield Harrogate)

If you can get to the supplying dealer, should be free

I would sigh loudly, shake my head and walk out if a dealer tried to charge for a two minute job!

Any dealer (reputable...) should do **** like that for free! Mine certainly did.

  • 2 months later...

Were the early VRS demo models without the VRS Mode button then? I thought the SG and VRS Button were an all or nothing package?

They had the button.

Plugged mine back in December (see earlier post). Still plugged in, decided to leave it as it doesn't bother me. Probably because, I'm a member of the B&Q discount club, so hearing probably not fantastic anyway. Due for service in May so I might have it turned to say 80% for the passengers.

Im going to ask for mine turning up.

My TSI became rattly and as just been fixed by the dealer. They also turned the sound down to quote: "30%", which makes things much more pleasant within sport mode.

My Sport now sounds like Normal, Normal is like Eco used to be, and Eco seems off altogether. It's also nice to hear the turbo under acceleration.

For me, the factory Sport mode was just too damn noisy and sounded completely false (even before it started rattling). The SG is definately one "extra" that I could easily without.
