MOT Passed

Featured Replies

Just a heads up to say that I passed my MOT with NO cat, NO back box and rev limited to 2500 in neutral.

Only advisory was headlight adjustment which was carried out.

Nice to find a sensible garage lol :D

Good to see a 53 plate Fabia still passing its MOTs and "touch wood" has yet to fail one over the last 4 years in my hands :)

That's very good to hear! I take it their test they do when they usually rev to the red line or there abouts doesn't really work with a limiter?

For a diesel to officially pass the smoke test it must be revved up to and held at maximum RPM for short period of time. I suspect Joel has found a friendly tester, since without a CAT and being able to rev to 4.5K the car would usually fail.

How does this work when a limiter is fitted to the vehicle?

Yeah it always helps to have a friend as your mechanic... glad I have one :)

My mot tester used to be my friend until he failed mine for no backbox :(

How does that work with modern diesels then?

My Yeti is limited in neutral to about 2,500-3,000 rpm, 1,000+ short of the redline.

That's how it was from new.

Just found this on a MOT Testers Manual site :

If the engine checks are satisfactory and having removed any oil temperature probe, raise the engine speed to around 2500rpm, or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower, and hold for 30 seconds to fully purge the inlet and exhaust system.

Raise engine speed slowly to maximum to check the operation of the governor. Once the engine speed has stabilised or if it becomes clear that the governor is not working, release the pedal, return to idle and stop the engine.

Most mot tester are little hitlers in there own little world, I worked with some evil ones in the past, but I'm now one and could not give a money's about emmisions or decats, anything else wrong then I'm coming down like a tonn of bricks lol

Do you not get in trouble for passing decats or too higher emissions?

yeah you can do.

Prob not a good idea posting on a public forum as a tester saying you don't give a monkeys about parts of the test tbh..............

I did wonder where everyone took their Skylines with no CATs. :D

Nice to know you're doing your job properly.

Use a tester who does no mechanical work, they don't care about the result so it's down to the car, and I'm yet to have a fail. The guy I use is honest, he was slightly perplexed at the 'loud and proud' Power Flex bushes but after 2 minutes under the car the first time he complained that I'd replaced everything he would normally look to fail it on but he was going to find something as he didn't like the colour. After three tests he's managed to give me a single advisory for a worn TRE, as I had a new one in the foot well ready to go on a car that's over 13 years old I'm happy with that.

As for not giving a monkeys I knew of a few testers like that, one who didn't need the car, another who had substitute cars for emissions work, they got away with it for a while, but non of them are testers any more.

Tbh iv I wernt a tester any more I could not care. Worst job in the world for a mechanic.

I care to make sure the car is safe to be on the road not about how much **** comes out of the exhaust, and tbh this new rule on diesel de cats how am I ment to know that the car I'm testing at the time had a car fitted from factory?? I dont get any info written in my v40 sheet if it's ment to have one.

Also boss fox your correct how you know I do loads it skylines lol

My mate has a brand spanking new Audi A3 Sportsback and that thing won't rev past 2.5k in neutral.

Oh dear, diesel exhaust emissions pose a much more significant health hazard than petrol:

Anyone who doesn't care about emissions doesn't have kids or is too stupid to adequately assess risk which is why we have legislation to protect us.

Mate I'm not saying you don't have a point but have you every been stood in a train station with your kids where they are running diesel loco's or power cars? Having worked on the railway for 14 years, I would say one trains worth of emissions would pose more of a health threat than all of our cars put together! Lol

And I agree with you, however it doesn't make it alright, especially since all these dumb mods to remove emissions controls do absolutely NOTHING for performance.

This is why most manufacturers' new models are downsized turbo petrols, I don't mind diesels being used for heavy haulage because the efficiency savings offset the emissions, however with cars there's just no excuse, turbo petrols are better performing and much cleaner. Things have moved on and not caring about emissions is no longer an option in towns and cities.

I don't feel guilty about my egr delete...

I'm not getting into the debate about emissions as I run decat/egr delete blah blah but common sense says that a train and a car isnt very comparable. Emissions from my car carrying me on my own vs much higher emissions from a train but carrying 200, 300 or 400 people is going to make it lower per person. If all those people drove a car each they'd more than likely be more emissions and congestion.

So one bloke sat in a loco that doesn't even carry any other person other than the driver... Your right there is no debate there and not much common sense either lol

Because the R33 and R34 are in the tester's manual so need to have a cat.

Yet loads of people don't run a cat to save a few £££ or get a few more bhp cheaply.

They all need to go somewhere to find a tester that doesn't like sticking the probe too far up the exhaust come MOT time.

Oh it's just one bloke rolling about in his train? Never heard of that before to be fair, must get horrendous MPG :D

OT, but what do you do on the railway? :)
