Ah i thought it was a lovely sunny day to head out on my bike and it is just really too windy.

I will leave it a bit and see if it calms down but not looking like that happening.

Winds are great for Stava times lol

I love head winds for exercise and then you might get tail winds and that feels great, but getting blown sideways and all ways is less fun really.

40 miles done Sunday morning. Iffy weather made me very grateful for disc brakes.

Washing the bike after, discovered a good cut in the casing of the rear tyre - that would have been fun if it had let go at 40.5mph down the big hill...... :)

Replacement tyre cheapest £36 from a  UK supplier, but same tyre 26 euros inc delivery from Germany. Weird!

I got out on the road bike on sunday, 65 miles.

Now my knee, well behind my knee is in agony. It's like it's bottom of my hamstring, can barely straighten my leg.

I've managed to kill my new wheelset so they will be going back to Wiggle! Not ideal with a charity 100 mile ride coming up, my old wheels weren't up to much so I've ordered a cheap pair of Shimano wheels to use whilst I wait for replacements. I can't be doing without my bike really!

How did you kill the wheelset, or was it faulty?

As I am a fat bugger I have CX wheels on my road bike :) and 27c tyres

I think grit penetrated the front bearings, they were making a clicking when powering up hills, then when I washed the bike down (not really getting much water by the hubs) the wheel seized three days later and would only free by backing off the pre-load, now they just sound rough, can feel vibes through the bars when spinning the wheel off the ground. Wiggle want me to send both wheels back! Ordered some Shimano RS010 to tie me over whilst I find out what they are going to do with them. They do a CX version of the wheels I'm returning (only difference is an extra seal), might be a better option as I ride all year round regardless of weather!

I'm 85kgs which I think is quite heavy for a cyclist, although I'm only 10% body fat so not much chance of me slimming down lol

I am 108kg at 1.86m tall so really fat for a cyclist but I am loosing weight and I can crank out 40 miles at a reasonable pace so I am just having fun with it :-)

Weird with the wheels, i thought these days modern sealed bearing races were basically invulnerable! That said,  the smoothest hubs I have are still my 20-odd year old Shimano XT ones on the mountain bike and they are cup-and-cone.

They both have their merits as cup and cone deal with lateral loads much more effectively but usually require a bit more maintenance than sealed cartridges. In mileage terms the cup and cone will outlast cartridge so the extra time spent replacing the cartridge will most likely equal the maintenance of the other. The biggest difference is in manufacturing costs which could explain why they are so popular.

From looking online it's not that unusual I don't think. With those distances I bet you are losing weight quickly, I've lost quite a bit of fat since I've got into cycling!

My 115.5 - 116.5kg is sticking pretty much constant dressed and ready,

i got down to 114 ish before Christmas wearing the same kit. If i break my wheels it will be a bit of a shock.

Very much calmer today than yesterday thankfully but not the nicest of weather forecast for the weekend and i am off to the hills.

Yes it's a decent climb! Well worth the effort though!

Anyone done any routes around Mam Tor? Looking at doing this on Tuesday (on my own??) if the weather is alright.

Dropping the missus off at Meadowhall, so has to be within reasonable distance from there really, any where else to check out?

I'm a few miles north of there & when I do get a day off and the weather is good a couple of us do tend to pedal down that way to go out for a ride

I've done most of that Mam Tor route (in various rides) on my cyclocross bike over the years, the trails out there are really good, I would have liked to have owned a mountain bike at the time as some of the descents are hard going on 700x28 touring tyres .

This weeks weather forecast isn't looking great, there is likely to be high winds/sleet/snow & rain for most of this week :(

Not far up the road from Meadowhall is Greno Woods & Wharncliffe Woods, there are lots of trails in them (some DH routes/XC routes). It will also be closer to Meadowhall so less time travelling and more time riding ;)

After 2 1/2 days of torrential or just rain at the Sunny South West of Scotland and never on my bike i have have withdrawal symptoms so need to go get some miles in before a couple of days of proper wintry weather hits.

Will greno/wharncliffe be better conditions? Not wanting anything too hardcore downhill.

Difficult to say about the conditions, Greno will be a lot more sheltered if the bad weather does come.

Have a look on here http://www.ridesheffield.org.uk/projects/greno-woods/ there is a little info on some of the DH routes, My son and I have done Pub Run & Steel City (on CX bikes), we don't do jumps etc but the trails cater for everyone as there a multiple routes down some trails avoiding certain obstacles.  The trails are nice & fast flowing (if your on a mountain bike).

If cross country/non signposted trails are of more interest, head out from the car park (in the link above) and go into Wharncliffe Woods instead of Greno Woods, there are miles of trails in there that aren't documented

Ended up parking in Castleton, biking to the top of Mam Tor and down into Edale. Then back up Mam Tor and back to Castleton. Didnt really have time to do much else bit weather was awesome bit very very windy.

I've recently moved to the Forest of Dean and now have trails on my doorstep! This photo of my winter hardtail was taken 10 minutes pedal from my house at the head of some absolutely superb singletrack!

Every time I go out I find more trails to play on, happy days...

A white Whyte aren't they great:thumbup:
