Exhaust soot deposit

Featured Replies

I've noticed now a big sooty stain on my garage floor from the Sport, which I assume is from start up. Just wondering if anyone else has seen the same. Can't say that I've felt that there is anything wrong, and MPG is more or less OK (~50). I could take a photo, but its pretty self explanatory!

There will I guess be a certain amount of sooty deposits get projected from the exhaust on a cold start up, I remember it all too well from my diesel owning days. Same for petrol as well but only in small amounts and if you park in the same spot could be noticeable over time. Don't know about mine, it's parked outside on gravel, so not really seen.

I have nothing on my garage floor from the Citigo.

I checked my garage floor too and could see nothing there either.

Can't comfirm this either way as mine is never parked in the same place. Wouldn't have though you'd get a big build up from a petrol. I know my fabia vRS left a big black mark on the fence from start up. Only petrol that I've notice a mark from way my Alfa 145, but that's because the engine was gone and pumped out smoke.

I think diesels are relatively clean nowadays, as the SQ5 doesn't spew out crap on start-up. I'll take closer look at the Citigo when I clean it later...

That's more like condensation that's blown out of the exhaust rather than soot.

Either way, none of the other cars I've had over the last few years (since this floor has been down) has left any deposit on the floor  :|

Whats a " Garage "

It's a place you put your car into a night, thus leaving a nice empty space for people to use your drive as a turning bay..... :swear:

Did any of your other cars have the exhaust end pointing to the ground?

Good point... doesn't look like it when looking at old photos..

Often notice cars driving along in heavy traffic with watery deposits blowing out the exhaust.

You will find that a lot of the time it is worse if you do very short journeys, the exhaust does not warm up enough to clear the condensation that builds up.

Then you will get water sitting in the pipe and next time you start the car the pressure of the exhaust gases pushes out the excess water, along with sooty deposits.

I doubt for one minute that it's running so rich to cause soot. The ECU wouldn't allow it.
