Ok so i changed the gearbox oil only about 1.3litres came out and when i filled it witg only 1.9 litres it filled to the top is that right ? Its dupposed to take 2.4 litres ?

prior changing the gearbox oil, the engine and the gearbox must be hot (90 C).

otherwise old oil will stay in.

you have now 2.4 liter of new oil, old oil, and sludge inside the gearbox.

If the car was driven before changing oil some of the oil will still have been held by the gears. I let my oil drain for at least an hour.

Haynes said 2.4, that amount overfilled mine. It' more like 2.2 litres.

Take car for a very short journey, then let the oil settle in gearbox for about half an hour then recheck oil level, might find it then needs oil topping up.

I have a question about changing the gearbox oil. I read that the drive gear can fall into the gearbox if you're not careful. How can I prevent that from happening? How should I pull the cable out so it all stays together?

There is no technique. You don't pull the cable. After you unscrew the screw 1, remove lock 2, pull straight up drive 3.

It's a good idea to let the oil warm up and drain for about an hour.

Then fill with GL4 only otherwise say goodbye to you synchros.

Okay, thanks for the tips. Isn't the white plastic drive attached to the cable? Or how can it fall into the gearbox. Do you maybe also know the torque for the drain plug?

It's a push fit onto the cable, so it can slide off, but it can't actually drop down into the box.

Hmmm so why is everybody saying that you must be careful it doesn't drop into the gearbox in other topics?

Because people unscrew the cable from up top then try to sloppily remove it.

The white plastic drive is not push fit onto any cable.

As for 'can't actually drop down' part, I wouldn't count on it.

Would applying some strong glue to the gear before fitting back into box solve this problem once and for all.

The plastic gear meshes to a plastic ring inside differential. Any oil loss affects the lubrication of that assembly because it is positioned in the highest point of the gearbox. The gear wears, gets loose, cracks, and eventually pieces fall inside the gearbox. Yet it's no big deal if the gear falls. It will be easily crushed and turned to dust. You only need to buy a new speedometer drive.

Okay, thanks for the help! But can I use the oil which is rated api gl4/5?

No. 75W-90 GL4 or 75W-80 GL4.

80 I suggest it will make especially first gear shifts smoother.
I use Valvoline GL4

Can anyone confirm the part numbers for the two different types of speedo gears (15 & 16 teeth) and also where to obtain them.

Thanks

I managed to obtain them and it was VERY VERY HARD,
In any way search for these part numbers
002 409 191 E

002 409 191 B

002 409 193 A

002 409 611 B
The teeth are dependant on the last number.
Skoda octavia mk1 will work but will display wrong speed, I can live with it.
Then old felicias before facelift will use steel insert and gear will fit onto splindes.
New after facelift felicias will use a plastic shaft one piece thing.
Anyway you can make it work
