New Cambelt and Water Pump

I have an Octavia 1.9 '58 plate and at a recent MOT my Skoda garage has told me I need a new cambelt and water pump (overdue). They've quoted £495 for the job inc. vat.

 

I live in the Bournemouth/Lyndhurst area. Does anyone have any comment re price or ideas re independent garages with reputation with skodas??

It's probably worth doing some digging of your own on them, but at least you'll be able to get a comparative price.

 

Are you going to Meadens Skoda or another dealer for that price?

I ended up going to a VW dealer as they were a lot cheaper at the time.

I had mine done recently at main dealer fixed pricing...not a fan of the dealer but was good to get a Skoda stamp in the book!

I use vasworks for all the work on my Audi, good team of staff who will always help. Good labour rate and prices and always use genuine parts. VAS works are in Holton Heath, just the other side of Poole.

Monks VAG specialist, Castle lane Between Chandlers Ford and Baddesley, always used them for my octavia last five years and can't fault them. Can't give you a price but lot cheaper than your quote. Check their website.

Does it really need changing @ 4 years, of is it just the dealer drumming up some business?

Isn't it 7 years in Europe & we're seen as a soft touch?

 

Mine is 6 years old/60K miles , maybe I should get it done soon!!

That is what Skoda UK (and the rest of VAG UK) say.

About to ring around to get my 59 plate done. The skoda site still says £459 fixed cost which seems reasonable. I wonder if they could do it even less?

A local specialist has it on their website for £369 so my local skoda garage is doing today at that matched price. So they can do it for less but you need to give them a reason too.

will going direct with Skoda always work out more expensive than anywhere else?

You will usually pay a bit more at a main dealer but, for something like this that can destroy my engine if it fails, I'm OK with that. Make sure, if you're using an independent, that the price they're quoting is for genuine Skoda parts so that what you're getting really is like-for-like.

 

I like the confidence that being able to go back to a dealer and say "You fitted this and it destroyed my engine. Your problem" brings.

Just had mine done at local indy last week, £325. Just done 100,000 and only got it done as its not been done previously and thougt it about time. Local stealer quoted £450, standard fixed price. Had no issues before the change, but as planning stage 1 remap, 312mm brakes,  smf clutch and 17" wheels, I wanted to make sure, as much as possible anyway, that the engine was going to be ok.
