Hi, I would appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer here before I go off to my dealer for a diagnosis.

I recently bought my '09 Superb II 2.0 170 TDi Elegance but when I bought it from the independent car dealer there was a message on the display for 'no bend lighting' and 'check dipped beam bulb' and the bulb failure light was on. The dealer chap said is would be the bulb and I recently replaced the xenon bulb but the problem still exists. I checked all the connections which are fine, but I did notice a little condensation in the unit once when it was wet.

I put VCDS on it to extract the fault codes and this is what came out:

I am thinking it is a fault in the controller but before I try and source another headlight unit I would like to be as sure as I can. Also before I take the bumper off as this looks like a bit of a task too.

The moisture inside the headlight would be a pointer for me, corrosion can cause issues with the adjustable elements of the headlight. It has been discussed over on the Octavia II forum a few times.

 

Moisture isn't always an issue, it says in the manual it can occur naturally, but even in very wet weather I've never noticed it on mine.

 

Just out of curiosity will the selling dealer not fix it for you considering the fault was present prior to purchase?

Possibly, I would like to identify the issue before going back to the seller as I bought the car from Leicester and I live in Surrey so I can't just pop back for them to diagnose, but if I can say it is X then it would be easier and I don't mind making one trip.

I wondered if the fault codes pointed to a failing component or another problem such as a broken cable or something.

When you replaced the bulb did you also do a fault clear with the VCDS?

It could be that it has water ingress or a faulty sensor though, but reading the fault codes to me it looks like a problem with the controller as VCDS is unable to query it.

Is clearing the codes after changing the bulb likely to have any effect? I could try that.

Not sure if it still applies but Xenon bulbs when being replaced used to need to be set to the home position i.e straight and level by VCDS, it might be worth a look at if it's not set right and thus sending a fault code regardless, let us know how you get on.

I have just retrofitttet Xenon on my Octavia and get these errors.

My Modules seem fine.

I am not able to do any codings on the AFS module at the moment - all trys is refused!?

My problem was actually the control unit in the headlight, I ended up putting in a replacement one but still needed a new control unit (£200!). There are two control boxes on the Xenon headlights (I thought there was only the one), one is the high voltage for the bulbs, the other is the control unit.

Ouch, that was expensive! And i have error on both of them! :-(
For the look of it, it do no look if there is some kind of intelligence built in to the high voltage one, like in the other one!? (CanBus)
