Reaching into/loading a Roof Box on a Yeti

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I have bought a roof box (Thule Motion 200) for our summer hols camping trip & was wondering if/what any of you use to assist with the loading of your roof box without standing on the rear wheel? I have been looking at the plastic folding step/stool which can be packed into the car & we can use it whilst away. The problem seems to be the plastic steps are a bit cheap & seem to break quite easily.

Attached is a picture of the Yeti with box fitted, it looks quite good (if a roof box can ever look good!!)

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem and bought a solid non folding caravan step from Go Outdoors. It was about £7 and still is. It is small enough to fit on the boot and then to pack around, I tried a couple of folding steps and couldn't get one sturdy enough!

Worth a go for £7!

I used to stand on the rear wheel to reach in when we had a Yeti, or open a door and stand on the sill, not ideal but it worked ok.

Johann had a picture up recently of the folding step he uses.

Rear wheel for me too. You always have it with you!

Its the rear wheel and door sill for me also

Yep I use the standard plastic folding step stool. Have never given way under me. I also have the parcel shelf cover around the parcel shelf (with the net under it) and said step stool lives inside that on the parcel shelf.  The non folding variety will always be in the way or not in the car when you need it, so makes no sense to me.

Mine is similar to this:

Thanks Everyone. Cracking site this.

I had planned to get a folding stool once I bought a roof box but found the rear wheel and roof rails to be excellent foot & hand holds respectively. The folding step like Johann shows is a bit too small for me - I'm only 5' 7" so the wheel works better for me. We only use the roof box a couple of times a year, so I'm happy with that.

Like the look of the parcel cover but seems a little expensive at about £30 to keep an umbrella in.

I just stand on my rock sliders ....

title says 'on a Yeti' :p

Nope it can hold far more than a brolley trust me. Ice scraper, my original long aerial, anything you want easy access to when the boot is loaded. And top part has a zipped pouch too. Best bit of kit I've bought the Yeti for sure. Well worth the money.

Apologies for going off topic Johann but did you have to modify the shelf to fit the under shelf net? Looking at my car there does not seem to be any holes/fixings etc to see how it would fit. I did ask my local dealer for additional information but the said "the computer says no" fitting information available.

I thought it just slid around the shelf; no fixings.

It's just a circular tube with one side a net and the other a zipped pocket...  and it just fits around the parcel shelf. There is no fitting required:

This is the top of it unzipped showing the ice scraper in it (this is not my car - in mine the plastic stool lives UNDER this zipped pocket and is sits safely there even when you take the parcel shelf out and carry it around):

And this is the underside (also not my car):

Used a small non folding plastic step-up from Wilko, also came in handy for washing the roof and seemed to fit in with the bags in the boot.

I have the Draper heavy duty step stool.  A tad more expensive than the "no-name" ones on eBay but I prefer the rather more robust build of the Draper item.

Not that I have a roof box, mind.  Mine is mainly called upon when washing the roof, or adjusting the roof-mounted bike rack.

I've bought the iZIQuick autostep, works really well.

Being180cm and having a roofboox on my yeti, I find it a lot easier loading/unloading using this.

Simple but ingenious B)

I seem to recall a Thule folding step that hangs off the rear wheel - but that being said, my roofbox is now mounted on my father's Discovery3 and he just carries a short folding bench in the boot for access.

That is clever, but of little use when you want to load a bicycle. There is no way on earth you can balance from the edge of the roof, on a step fixed to the wheel and load a bicycle onto a roof mount. The only steps that work for that are ones that can be placed around the centre of where the bicycle will be.

Many thanks Johann, very much appreciated. It's time for me to make a purchase methinks.
