VAG competition for Yeti/medium hatch

Featured Replies

I know that they're different vehicles in many ways but Seat is now offering the Leon 5 door with 0% interest plus £1000 finance contribution, in addition to a free Technology pack (Sat Nav, Led lights all-round, DAB tuner). If this offer was available last summer, I'd probably have chosen a Leon over my Yeti (although the Ecomotive I wanted wasn't available at the time either!) When deliberating, I test drove a Leon FR with the 150PS diesel engine and it was good fun and a great match for the car. The Ecomotive is ridiculously frugal as well, you might even get 65mpg in real world driving I'd guess? It might be worth looking at if you're in the market for a new hatch and you don't necessarily need 4wd or the raised ride height of the Yeti.

  • Fine, but in my mind any vehicle comparative to a Yeti has to have increased ride height and the possibility of 4x4 somewhere in the range. As someone else says the Leon is is the Octavia range.

Not a bad looking car, but prefer the higher driving position of the Yeti.

Does it have a raised ride height?

Is it available with 4 wheel drive?

if the answer is no to either, then how is it comparative to the Yeti?

As per my original post, I was pointing out that if you're in the market for a medium sized hatch that's fun to drive, the Leon is a good contender at the moment. Not everyone wants or needs 4wd or a raised ride height. I certainly didn't but the Yeti won out when I was buying as it was great value and fun to drive. If you want a comparative list, I'm sure someone could be bothered but I'm certainly not. I was just pointing out an option available to people.

Isn't that more of an Octavia equivalent though?

Nothing wrong with a bit of harmless discussion though is there ?

He's acknowledged those differences in his first post.

Yeti / Leon / Golf are all similar sized VAG cars, with similar pedigree (Yeti shares a lot with MkV Golf), they share a lot of the running gear and interior, so there's a lot of similarity - just that the Yeti is raised up a little bit and has the option of 4wd if you want it (not everyone does, plenty of 2wd Yetis around so not everyone wants Yetis because of 4wd!).

That's the very point I was trying to make muddyboots, these vehicles are very similar in many respects. Look at the dimensions and only the height really differs. If you can do without the raised ride height (and I must admit, I've kind of got used to the great view from my Yeti, plus the extra height of the roof helps when you're 6'4" :notme: ), the Leon might be a great option for some.

Yeti     Length 4223mm Width 1793mm Height 1691mm Wheelbase 2578mm Boot capacity 416L

Leon   Length 4263mm Width 1816mm Height 1459mm Wheelbase 2636mm Boot capacity 380L

I sold a Leon to get the first of now 2 Yetis. Things may have changed, but in my experience there is no equivalence in quality. All 3 Golf V based but the Czechs build a better car.

I'll take the Unimog for me to play Tonka toys with. :sun:   But can I keep the Yeti for the family? They love it!  Not least for its height and views.

I love it as all I've needed to work on it in 25000mls is a couple of oil changes. Next oil, air, fuel and cabin filters next w/e.  On 105000 overall now.

Can you fit 2 full size push bikes in the back of a Leon and still have room for 3 people seated?  If not, then the comparison is invalid for me? Appreciate the OP is making a point about "if you're in the market for a family hatch".  I'll still keep the Yeti (and the Unimog!) though.

You've obviously never been off-roading in a 'Mog then!!

'Mog has both. Meets the criteria.

Whatever!

Used to tow Harriers jump jets around the airfield with a very old style Mog, or a newer JCB tractor; the old Mog was the more reliable.

Might be needing to borrow one this coming winter, as I'm now in low riding 2wd territory again regard my own transport :S

Funny but I'll be doing the opposite;

17" wheels will be replaced by 15"

Oh the offending 17" items.

I Have 15'' on my new van with michelin tyres standard fitment wheel and tyre,  makes everything in the back rattle, and not a good ride, don't know if its the tyres or the size.  And a fag paper would not fit between the calipers and the rim :giggle:

Will have the same thing with the front discs, a sliver of space between the rim and calliper but 15" is the approved winter size.

Didn't you have an Octavia estate last time I looked Tim?

I think you will find that Seat offer a 4WD leon with raised ride height. It is called the X-Perience.

The Leon is very much a comparable car to the yeti, i have a 2014 Yeti, and have the Leon on my shortlist when i change it.

So the Leon would appear to tick many boxes.

Didn't you have an Octavia estate last time I looked Tim?

Yes but I couldn't get on with its ergonomics, the seat and right offset foot pedals were giving me hip problems bizarrely, so sadly had to let it go.

Our Fabia has always been comfortable and with the Rapid being related its proving to be far better for comfort.

Regards,

Tim.
