I want to get a bulb kit to keep in case of emergencies, but the bulb part numbers in my Owner's manual, page 165 do not bear much of a resemblance to bulb part numbers listed in the technical specs of universal bulb kits, even those recommended as suitable for the Mark I Octavia.

 

Does anyone know of a comparison/translation table online?

 

Ok, so an H4 Front Headlight is easy to recognise, but many of the other part numbers are far from universal:

Side lights              W5W

Turn Signal lights   PY21W

Fog lights               H3

Rear Lights            P21W

Side lights/fogs      P21/4W

 

In one universal kit, labelled as suitable for the Skoda Octavia I was presented with this list of part numbers:

1 x H4 Headlamp Bulb

1 x R239 bulb (interior light)

1 x R382 (Flasher Clear)

1 x R581 (Flasher Amber)

1 x R207 (5W Various applications)

1 x R245 (5W Various applications)

1 x R380 (Flasher / Stop Light)

1 x R566 (Stop / tail light)

1 x R233 (4W Various applications)

1 x R501 (Side lights / interior light

 

I'd be really grateful if anyone can help.

What's not universal about those part numbers? Any motor factors should be able to sell you w5w's or h3's etc, they're all fairly standard bulbs.

If I'm honest I've never seen bulbs sold under anything else/ no idea what the R references are above?

Most universal bulb kits have crap bulbs in them..

Also, the Octy indicator bulb has off centre holding pins, most universals ive seen only have the straight axis type bulb,

so you're on dodgy ground on that bulb alone - let alone the others.

 

I think the R numbers are probably some stupid EU labelling standard that means nothing but confusion for most people!!!

 

 

If you want to do it properly, just buy a couple of each bulb type - proper ones - and put them in a little box in the car.

The numbers you have listed with the R are Lucas numbers and have been around for years in the trade.

410 Tungsten headlight bulb, 472 H4 Halogen head light bulb,380 bulbs are 5w21w stop and tail light, 382 bulbs are std flasher bulbs, 501 5w capless side light ect.

They didn't use to have the R in front though but were std fit bulbs on the most cars until they started fitting H7s and offset pin indicator bulbs and the like.
