Thinking of joining them for their fibre optic broadband as they seem pretty cheap.

Anyone had any experience with them?

Not on fibre, but I'd recommend them.

On fibre with them, getting around about 37-38 Mbps on it, which I don't think is bad considering the distance we're from the exchange.

I don't think that it's the best on cost though, for me it's £25 ppm on a 18 month contract, I would recommend that you get yourself your own router which can deal with both ADSL & VDSL, so you don't have two boxes & loads of wires and host of mains power adapters littering the place.

I have a Draytek 2850n, which is an old model, it's more of a business router than a home one and it has more functions than whatever I need or know about, but its ADSL/VDSL capabilities are what I bought it for.

Not on fibre but have been with them for about 2yr now after switching from BT.

I knew they were a BT subsidiary so we went that way to hopefully minimise any problems switching. All went very smoothly.

We got a discounted deal with them for the first year, after that is was due to go up a lot, I phoned them up as asked for a deal to stay. They agreed immediately and put me on a another discounted offer for a 2yr contract.

We've only had one internet outage in that time (BT fault in Edinburgh) and the router had to be replaced once as well, again no argument they sent out another before needing the problem one back. The ADSL router is crap but they do allow you to configure you own if you want.

We're getting fibre in the area next year or so. Not sure if we'll sign up or not. We get about 12Mb and that manages a couple of video streams no problem. I only very occasionally download large files like Linux images.

We've got the duel phone and internet package with them. you have to pick the options carefully, some of the thing you get from BT by default are extra with Plusnet (but still cheaper overall).

I should have pointed out or mentioned, that I'm on a Fibre only deal, I don't have phone with them as I don't pay the bill and when I looked into it the difference between PN & BT was minimal. so not really worth changing provider for.

I can get £103 cashback through topcashback. Going to pay the £159 for the year for the phone line and it's £3.49 a month for 6 months then up to £14.99. Just waiting on my current contract to expire with Virgin next month so i don't have a £45 cancellation fee.

Does the normal modem need plugged into the wall or does it just connect to the router? We only use the laptop in the same room as the router at the moment and only use the wifi on our phones in other rooms. Will the router be ok for that or is it really that bad?

Interested in this sort of change too. Moving house soon - and will look at fibre options....

Very good we use them at work for our Fibre and previously on adsl2. They are quick and professional if you have to open a support ticket but generally you don't get down time so rarely use there tech support.

When you order Fibre with PN, you'll have to pay £6 for the delivery of the wireless router (Technicolor 582n), on installation day, the engineer will come round & swap out your old socket & replace it with a new one, plug in the BT Modem & Technicolor 582, he'll then disappear to do the necessary in the local cabinet and by the time he returns the connection will be up & running.

However I would recommend that you buy your own wireless router, something from Draytek (2860/2760), Billion 8800 NL or such like, which accept direct connection from the wall socket without having to use the BT Modem and loads of ethernet cables & multiple mains adaptors!

I've got a BT Openreach socket at a random place in my livingroom which was installed when the houses were built. Is this what they will use or is it another socket?

No-one's really commented on it yet, but they have really good British call centres. This makes a huge difference when you have to call them (rarely!). When I have called them, their customer service is excellent.

Good customer service goes a long long way in my book! I've been with them for about 5 years now, and they are excellent.

They use the existing box, just change the face plate and change a few wires around. That's not to say that they won't change the whole box, I think it depends on the type of box you have.

Sky are top notch for fiber and don't require any messing about with phone sockets or multipuls boxes....

So is this one ok http://www.wildarc.co.uk/billion-bipac-8800nl-wireless-n-vdsl2-fibre-adsl2-firewall-router-white?

Does the engineer set up if i had my own router or only plus nets router?

That should be fine.

The engineer will only setup the the BT modem & possibly setup the Technicolor one, in my case he setup the BT modem and left me to do the Technicolour one, which I never unboxed.

As soon as he'd left, I just unplugged the BT modem, put it back in its box, plugged in the Draytek one, amended the settings, and after a a bit of head scratching & tweaking, it kicked in and has been perfect since.

Holding a steady 37,5 - 38 Mbps Down, 17,5 - 18 Mbps Up.

However I have found that for some reason, they have put my IP profile too low, my line will support up to 72 Mbps, so I'll be having a chat with customer services about it.

Fitting a new extension if requested is part of the Fibre install package, so they can fit the new socket where-ever you want.

BTW, if you want something faster than 40Mbps, you have to go with an independent ISP, the BT system currently has a 80Mbps capability, but BT Retail only sell an up to 40Mbps option; the ISPs using BT lines can sell you the up to 80Mbps option.

Aii of them are good , untill there is a BT Fault , as Plusnet have experienced over the  last month , to my dread .  over 4 weeks on normal broadband have experienced from 5MEG down to 0.8 , yes customer service is good when you get through takes about 45 minutes , but unless it is a basic Router fault , all you get is normal answer . Oh and no point having a contract more than a year , as they only warranty the router for 1 year , so you have to go get your own if it goes wrong after that anyway . Wish there was virgin fibre , here , as friends are always saying mega fast and very few Down Time problems .

My average is 0.5 iirc and they've just had an outage as I got a call from home asking how to fix it  I just replied call them up on the help line

As I said earlier I'm on Fibre now and the jump is amazing, from an average of 4 Mbps, to 37-38 Mbps, however after a chat with PN customer services, I'll be upgraded as of next month to 70-72 Mbps possibly a tad more.

The downside is it's going to cost me £30 pcm :'( , but then again it is fully unlimited, no caps, no throttling etc.

I used to have Virgin Fibre which was 100mb at the time but moved to a new build where they somehow havn't installed fibre cables so had to go to their 'national' which i'm currently getting 10 down and 1 up which drives me crazy sometimes.

Been told i can cancel on the 15th Sept without a cancellation fee so just counting down the days and then around a 2 week wait for the Plusnet to get installed.

Crap, I have been on 80/20 with bt for nearly 2 years and a mate is on 330/30 FTTH.

You might be on old equipment, but bt can and do do 80/20.

If its anything like their business service then they are incredibly helpful.

I believe it all relies on the BT infrastructure though so I'd pay for customer support over advertised speeds.

I am only going by personal experience and what I have been told by some friends, both have BT and both were told 40 meg was all they could have; one had it put in about a year ago and the other only a couple of months ago. When I went to fibre in May this year, BT was only offering me 40Meg, whereas several other ISPs using BT lines were offering 80Meg, so I went with Aquiss, which is not cheap, but is locally based, UK call centre, and the guy who runs it has been an expert in the field since ADSL was in its infancy.

I've had this with TalkTalk. They sold me "up to" 76mb on a line profile that - confirmed by one of their own engineers - only has a profile for 40mb. TT deny that this is the case and refuse to do anything about it other than cut me back to Fibre Medium which would reduce my upload speed from 10mb to 2mb :finger:

I will very likely be going to PN when we move house next month.

80/20 with BT here.  like most people we know.
