Here's my 54,000 mile brake disc MOT failure

Featured Replies

Oops, so this is why it failed! New discs and pads fitted now. I never realised the shiny metal was just a layer on the disc, Oh well!  post-11365-0-04042000-1409324401_thumb.jpg

That's corrosion rather than breaking through a case-hardened layer.

Had your money's worth out of them!

how are they so bad after only 50,000 miles?!

Not enough use - were they rears?

Do you live near the coast!?

Nope, they were fronts, originals from new back in 2008. I'm sure brake disks used to last a lot longer years ago!

Interesting what you said about not enough use, I don't use this motor as much as I used to,

Do you reckon that lack of use would increase corrosion of a brake disc? (yes I know 54,000 is not bad), The car does about 60 miles a week at the moment.

And nope, I don't live by the coast!

My Fabia2 front discs lasted 70,000 miles.

im on 60k in my 2011 vrs and the front disks are fine, are you sure your front brakes arent binding on or something? ;)

Do you wash your car a lot?  This can lead to corrosion of discs.

My Yeti did 130,000 on the original discs and pads on the front.  The rears were replaced at 90k because of corrosion.

Mate, once they're wet it takes 20 mins to go rusty so if that doesn't get cleaned off every day(or sooner) then its eating away. The mileage doesn't really matter, if you don't really brake then they're not going to get perfectly clean, tricky really as its down to your journey and driving style. Sometimes, when its safe, I give my brakes a good old workout because I know they don't really get used hard. Now and again I pull the handbrake on a tad while I'm driving (listen to that dong!) because I know it cleans the rear discs and I've suffered rear disc problems before. You may think this is a load of old codswallop but its what I've learned in 35 yrs of trying to look after my motors.

No that doesn't sound like codswallop at all, makes a lot of sense. I mend LCD TV screens using Frozen Bacon, you should hear what people think to that until they try it and it works!

I replaced my front discs due to corrosion on the inside face, car was 5 years old with approx 44k on the clock,i bought mine when it was 2 years old with 11k on the clock...........i suspect lack of use causes the corrosion to build up.

the disks on my last octy were still OK at 150000 though I had changed the pads

That is phenomenal - it must be a record (no its a disc).

My car just had a service at 55k miles and I was told that the rear discs are wearing unevenly, however at the moment they are still fine and will be for some time.

Explain??

Explain??

+1 how can anyone not want to know more. Even if it hijacks the thread.

+ another 1 I can assure you, you have my utmost attention

If it isn't significantly weakened (I can't see the thickness from that photo), I can't see that as a failure.

Corrosion like that on a disc reduces the brake efficiency.

And my curiosity is also roused about the frozen bacon  :p

Mot failure or not.....would you have discs like that on your car??..............i wouldnt.

I *need* to know about the bacon...

I certainly wouldn't, also I wouldn't like to get a *******ing for failing it when it should have passed.
