TSI / TFSI what's the difference

Featured Replies

Both the same.

Audi say TFSI

Volkswagen say TSI

Which particular TSI / TFSI,   what Engine sizes or car.

With a 1.4 TSI / TFSI 1.4 Twincharger, 132 - 136 kW 2009 - 2014,

there is no Difference in the Engine with the Audi TFSI, compared to the VW, Skoda , Seat TSI,

other than the Map. & who cares about the 'F'.

No idea about other TSI / TFSI with other Cars / Engines.  Others will know.

Can mean a difference: 2.0 tsi (k03) and 2.0tfsi(k04) - depending on the car some are TFSI and are older engine K03 .

And in some cases it can be just branding

A wholly confusing system

I thought it was tfsi is a belt cam and tsi had a chain cam. This is in reference when used with skoda.

tbf they arent first to do this - peugot HDI 1.6 and ford TDCI 1.6 diesel engine joint venture identical engine... Cant remember what citroen called it, or mazda tho they fiddled with it to make it actually reliable for the mazda3...

It is very confusing.

They are effecticvely the same.

FSI = Fuel Stratified Injection

TSI = Turbo Stratified Injection

TFSI = Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection

Then they also do a TSI with a supercharger but still called TSI... but then Audi also decided to call the twincharged engine TFSI!

Afaik there is only 1.8 engine but it is called both the TSI and TFSI but both are chain driven.

Octy Mk2 vRS Pre-FL 2.0tfsi? 197bhp

Octy Mk2 vRS FL 2.0tsi ? 211bhp

Golf as above I think

Audi S3 2.0tfsi? 265bhp

Seems like it's Audi that throw the spanner in the works, but they seem to get slightly uprated Kit - S3 has a bigger intercooler and different cams to it's K04 counterparts.

I have a 2.0 petrol VRS 59plate FL and it's tsi on the engine but in the log book it say tfsi that's what I don't get lol

In that case, if your air intake is part of the engine cover then it's a tfsi (unlikely)

If a separate air intake pipe then the book is just wrong (likely)

My MkV Jetta had a 2.0L "FSI Turbo"

So basically then, theres no set rule to it? They just decide on the day?

Spoke to a skoda garage and they said it's a tfsi but all the covers will say tsi nothing to worry about.

I just find it a pain when I'm trying to order parts for the car

Yours is the TSI chain driven engine. The V5 just shows what the person wrote on the form when it was registered, which is often slightly inaccurate.

This ^^

Bless whoever these people are that pick up the phone at Skoda

You would have more to worry about if you had actually got the old TFSI and not the newer TSI

And volvo just call it a 1.6D

I take it that its the same KO3 turbo used the some of the first 1.8 cars?

I am struggling to piece this all together.  I have an EA888 1.8 tsi that I am researching plug and play parts, it looks like I can take bits that would also suit the EA888 2.0tsi chain driven as the cc difference comes from stroked pistons but otherwise it is the same block.  Same also applies for the 2.0tfsi K04 in the Cupra/S3 (some bits)

Most people seem to indicate that there is no crosscompatibility with the 1.8tsi and the 1.8t from the Octy vRS Mk1 and that these engines are totally different.  So that makes me think it will be a K03 but a different model, so essentially the same but I guess with different manifolds and other techie stuff like that.

For the novice, it's an interesting and baffling minefield.

From my understanding of this over the past couple of years...

The 1.8T in the mk1 is a different engine altogether.

The 1.8TSi (which we both have) is the same block as the 2.0TSi but with internal component differences. (The gudgeon pins for example are a mm thicker on the 2 litre units)

The capacity difference is achieved with stroking but I've had two answers on how - one said con rods and one said pistons (id go with the latter if I had to guess).

The block being the same is useful for us as external performance part fitment i.e. cold air intakes, turbo kits just bolt right on.... but there will be internal differences between the 1.8TSI, 2 litre Ko3 and 2 litre Ko4 cars. Having said that, mine has been absolutely bulletproof for over 40k and doesn't even sip at oil between services.

And volvo just call it a 1.6D

I thought someone had said volvo used it too, but i wasnt sure about it.

And BMW in the mini

:dull:  that engine really did end up every where.....

Well its alright using it everywhere, but was it any good?

Bit of a disaster if not isnt it haha

personally i dont i trust it... Alot of our BIK graded staff had 06 plate mk2 focus diesels and quite a few gave a lot of problems... I know of 3 that had entire engine replacements because of turbo issues, and eml lights... That said, in the mazda3 my father in law has, itsnever put a foot wrong...
