Rear wiper not working and fail it's mot

Featured Replies

Hi there I bought a vrs last week put it in for mot today and they fails it on back wiper blade not working or letting water out they test moter and was working fine they think there a brake I'm going to look I'm going to have a play around on the weekend and what like a bit help on what to try and do to fix the problem to pass its mot please help me out

Just check washer pipework.  Easiest way is often to get someone looking under the car whilst you activate rear wash wipe with engine off (easier to hear tinkling of water on the ground)

if it doesn't come out the ground, the break might be at the motor end in the bootlid so will necessitate the removal of the boot lid panel and checking the connection on the motor.  Cold weather often makes these pipes pop off.

As far as I know the rear windscreen wash/wiper is not an MOT test item.

I was just about to say the same thing, I know for a fact some people have gone through numerous MOTs without the rear wiper working.

The rear wash/wipe is definately not a testable item.

Kwik-Fit by any chance?!

As stated before, definitely not an mot item, only the front wipers. The quote is: They must provide the correct range of wipe to allow the driver to have an un-obscured view of the road ahead. The clue is in the "road ahead" says nothing about the road behind!

I was under the impression that anything fitted to the car must be in working condition to pass the mot... then again my last car went through 2 years with a fog light not working so disproves that

Neither spare tyre or rear wiper need to be legal or working for an MOT.

Advisory at most.

Reminds me, my rear wiper has stopped squirting water, will have to sort that before the winter is in and salt goes on the road!

Try poking a pin where the water comes out of as it may be blocked, and check the nut is tight enough to

+1 for the pin, clear the blockage. Reminded me to do mine, cheers!

I suggest you go back to the test station and set them straight regarding the requirements.

Re clearing a rear or front (non fan jet) washer nozzle.

I've found a Red Poppy badge has just the right size pin and comes with a handy black centre to use as a handle!

Maybe in this health and safety conscious society you don't get the metal pin ones anymore, glad I've kept mine for years in my toy (tool) box.

I think I'd be mentioning a trip to vosa to this testing station, absolutely incredible what some thieving garages get away with, item shouldn't even be an advisory let alone a fail.

Hallo,

The pipe for the rear wiper is behind the left side panel, and is atached to the wire loom, black in colour, follow the pipe round and also remove the rear panel, and ckeck for loose conected pipe fitting, this is where mine was apart. Hope this helps.

Chas.

The whole rear wash/wipe system on the MkII Octavia is poor.

The weak motor is a well documented issue on here, loads of threads on it.

As is the rear wash. The nozzles gets blocked easily. The water pressure of repeated efforts to get it to work exposes the weak connector / joints on the water feed tube.

It then pops off and leaks washer fluid into the interior of the car, either above the passenger side doors or more common in the boot behind the CD changer. Washer fluid then leaks on an electric controller which corrodes and then you get issues with the rear lights and boot release mechanism as well as a spare wheel well full of water and a damp car in winter.

Lift up the hinged plastic cap that covers the nozzle and then pop off the nozzle. Operate the rear wash and if water reachs the house roof then it's the nozzle!

I'd advice against using a pin, this can result in you inadvertantly adjusting the direction of spray which is an absolute nightmare to correct.

Stick the nozzle in a glass of hot vinegar for a few hours, that'll clear it!

I was told (rightly or wrongly) that if you had a spare in the car it had to be legal. But if there was no spare present that couldn't fail your MOT.

The AA says a worn out spare can't fail you (i.e. so long as it is stowed away.) But it will get you an advisory.

Regarding the rear wiper, there are cars without any so how can it be an MOT issue?

+1 on the spare wheel, that's what i always thought too. if it's there it should be legal.

Nope, does not have to be legal at all unless its fitted onto a car axle.

The spare tyre is not checked as part of the MOT. Obviously, if the 'spare' tyre is actually fitted to the vehicle, then it will be checked in the normal way. 'Temporary Use' spare tyres will fail the MOT if fitted at the time of the MOT Test.

Also from another site RE: the rear wiper.

Q. The rear wiper on my car doesn't work, will it fail the MOT test?

A. No. The rear wiper is not checked as part of the MOT.

Unless they have a shovel and a wheelbarrow handy, checking the spare in my car would be rather hard work.
