  • THAT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE ALL THAT SHOUTING HAS MADE YOU DEAF

  • Surely the sound generator adds a couple of extra sly HP? [emoji1]

  • Surely if there is extra load on the alternator with the additional swivel on the lights and the sound generator the effective bhp will actually be reduced in sports mode?   Only kidding

THAT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE ALL THAT SHOUTING HAS MADE YOU DEAF

Actual lol achieved!

If I use the ECO mode, I get lower mpg on the same journey (50 mile commute each way), than if I leave it in VRS mode - anyone else noticed this or am I subconsciously doing something different??

VRS mode - 51-52 mpg 'since start'

ECO mode - 47-48 mpg 'since start'

Also, maybe sad but I rather like the sound generator too.

I don't use Sport as much as I should - I find it's a bit unwieldy for motorway driving, but then that could be because I'm not used to it.

No discernable difference with MPG, apart from perhaps sport gives me a greater tendancy to drive like a hoonigan.  55mpg on my vRS TDi here, although regularly manage 60mpg+ on my journey to work without being particularly careful.

I never flick between modes. Set up my individual settings then just left them. If the modes made any real difference to performance id maybe use them.

Mine gets left in Sports mode :) I don't have any issues with 1st gear, and I am currently averaging 51MPG so I don't think that's too shabby.

I personally quite like the generated sound, but when cruising at constant throttle it dies away almost completely so it's not intrusive.

I might have a play with normal on my way home now though! :D

I wonder if most of the people whom do not like the noise generator have petrol rather than diesel engines?

I like it as it tends to muffle the low rev 'diesel rattle' that is sometimes evident on take off.

Yes. I have a petrol and hated the noise. I had a Focus ST prior to the vRS which gave a nice burble sound with it having the 5 cylinders. The sound generator just made the vRS sound like a transit van. To me anyway.

Yes, I have a petrol vRS and the sound generator is horribly intrusive. I test drove a diesel vRS before ordering the petrol one and although you could hear the generator it wasn't anything like as noticeable as it is in the petrol model.

That 5 cylinder engine sounds glorious!! Had a 5 cyl audi 80 once - no real guts but sounded great!

Indeed, I'm petrol and think it's terrible. I'm happy for my two litre turbo to sound like a two litre turbo - not what ever the hell that sound generator pumps out. I agree with SC03OTT, sounds like a transit van with a leaky manifold!

I'm coming from the 4.2L V8 Audi S4 (2004) so if engine sound was most important I would have stuck with that! Fuel bill and repair costs are considerably more important though...

Mines diesel and the best thing I've done to the car is unplug the sound generator, totally transformed the car making it so much more refined, the drone it made while cruising at motorway speeds got tiring fast.

Drive mainly in eco, except when preparing to overtake. Recently getting into the habit of going to sport to slow me down as I approach roundabouts, then I'm ready for a quick pull away. Also good for engine braking going down hill. Tsi dsg

decuk, after pulling the gear stick back for "Sport" try flicking it left then back a couple of times, you get loads of engine braking and a bit of exhaust growl to warn other road users of you intent, plenty of acceleration outta the roundabout too :notme:

Yes I have to admit that is a downside, but having owned a WRX previously it still seems fairly refined in Eco mode for motorway driving.

Or just use the paddles :)

That's the problem with dsg, SO MANY CHOICES. D,S,man, paddles. So much fun experimenting. Has be be done without other half in, or its, why's it revving, high, what's that noise etc etc. Simply using cruise used to cause grief as she could see my finger moving....... Never have a manual again.

Hmmm. I know what you mean, we got 50mpg on a family holiday this summer which you can tell from my fuelly ain't my normal driving style !

Related question: did you all notice the differences between modes straight away from new? I've only driven mine for 20 miles after pick-up yesterday, but didn't really notice much difference between the modes. Obviously I've been really gentle on the throttle and staying below 2500 rpm (petrol).  Throttle response didn't feel much different, and neither did I hear the sound-generator shout louder in sport... I do have the VRS mode button with sound generator.  Is it faulty?  I had a brief flash of the EPC light, so maybe that's related...

Is your vrs a manual or auto? If manual there isn't (to me anyway) a particularly noticeable difference in the modes - normal vs sport anyway. Throttle response is faster in sport, but you really have to plant your hoof to notice.

If you're staying under 2500rpm (which probably indicates you have a manual) then the sound generator may not have kicked in - it increases in noise as revs increase. If you're creeping it won't be noticeable.

You don't even noticed the difference in steering weight or responsiveness of the AFS?  The difference in throttle response is very noticeable even with light throttle on mine and on the TSI i test drove....

I have to say, steering weight doesn't change on mine either (or at least not noticeably)... I was surprised by this. Sound/throttle/gearbox do though.

it's a tsi manual. Steering weight doesn't change much either, if at all. I drove an Alfa Mito once which had a similar feature, and the different modes were worlds apart on that one: eco far too lazy and sport very twitchy.

I'll see what happens once I can press a little harder.

The steering weight on mine is noticeably different, pretty light on Normal and nice and weighted on Sport.
