GAP insurance - have I been conned?

Featured Replies

A shame really if its Horton's going down hill, can you clarify Brimma? or are you waiting for it to be settled before naming and shaming the dealers.

Hortons gave me gap for free and the mother in law for £100 IIRC. Was it Colin the finance chap?

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Horton's are adopting sharp sales practices as that was certainly my experience with them. In fact I'm still waiting for a call back from Oliver I was promised roughly 3 years ago on one of a few after sales issues I had (I gave up chasing and sorted the issue myself as there were more important things happening in my life at the time).

With regards GAP specifically, Horton's tried to give me the hard sell stating that FSA rules legally obligated them to both offer it to me and take me through the benefits of GAP insurance which is total and utter b@***@@s.

Wherever you have ordered the car from Brimma I hope you get it sorted.

Looks like you've been had Bry, but fair play for posting the experience. Seat dealers try this and lifeshine to try and make more profit via the back door or offset what the buyer has managed to negotiate off what they wanted to charge. Sharp practice that's typical of certain segments of the industry, more typical in the larger multi frachise dealerships IMO.

If you cancel the Gap ins. part of the deal, could the dealer be awkward and remove the £500 discount?

No way that's going to happen, I was offered the £500 discount, and then offered the GAP and/or extended paint warranty

I stupidly agreed to take the GAP, thinking it was a good idea at the time  :(

It wouldn't be appropriate to comment until it's resolved

All I can say at this stage is that I sent the cancellation off to Skoda GAP yesterday (7.10.14), but also rang them to say it was coming

They also confirmed to me that as far as they were concerned I had only paid £200 for the policy, which leads me to believe that £199 has been raked off somewhere to recoup some of the discount

If this does turn out to be the case I will be very, very disappointed   :(

Yup never take gap from a dealer. It's where they make a lot of commission and sales folk will suddenly become very aggressive when you say no.

I was supposed to be being contacted today by the dealer

Nothing heard so far.......surprise, surprise

If they have charged you £399 and you cancel within cooling off period then they have to give you £399 back surely?

I think you have every right to go in all guns blazing if they try to refund you only £200.

Best of luck mate..

I'm sincerely hoping it won't come to that, but if it does I will :)

£100 for the mother in law excellent result! I couldn't give mine away.
