start stop system

Featured Replies

what are the conditions that make this unavailable, mine seems not to work until the car has run a  bit, is it battery charge or engine not at temp.thanks

DSG or manual?

Not sure about warm up etc but mine kicks in far too often and inapropriately so I would love to find a 'condition' that I could use to stop it working altogether!

Think you can turn it of with a button near the gear lever or permanently with a VCDS

Yeah the button works sometimes, but often when I look down again a few seconds later the light's gone out again.  VCDS may be the answer.

Back to OP's question - I believe there are several conditions - warm up, DPF regen, heavy electrical load etc that block SS.  I think they are listed in the user manual.

Mine doesn't kick in until the engine is at least partially warm ( varies but let's say at least 5 mins of continuous running)

Mine's a DSG...

Mine doesn't run if the steering has too much angle, A/C on soon after startup, too many successive stop/starts and foot lifted off the pedal and placed back on without the car moving. From what i know it relies on the battery charging during braking the bump up the battery giving it a boost to keep starting the car once stopped.

thanks for the replys, think mine must be down to battery strength then, i had lights on but no ac, it took a while to start this morning again, cranked a good 20 secs longer than usual and the revs stayed at 1000, been doing this for a couple of weeks now, i found if you turn off the stop start, it re activates next time you turn the key,

Read the VCDS thread. Not sure I want to mess around with voltage limit parameters as a way to inhibit stop start.

Zoinks!!  There's something amiss with your car by the sound of it. If it's consistently doing this then it could be another fault which others have reported but no dealer has yet been able to replicate (so they say).  Take it in and get it checked under warranty.

There's list in the owners manual.

Does it say it is unavailable or there is an error?

Unavailable probably just means your battery charge is too low. Get a charger on the battery (but connect the -ve to the earth point on the bulkhead, not the battery) and see if it is any different after that.

Yea says unavailable mate,a diagonal line through the symbol, think its down to the battery, its going in next tues for investigation on the rear susspension, il get them to boost charge the battery then

I had the same problem with the start-stop function.

My car was at the garage three times until they fixed the problem. It was the temperaturesensor in the motor wich was malfunktioning.

They replaced that and the ECU on guarantee

Works fine now

Hi

I have hade problems again...

When i stop, like in front of a barrier and have to wait for it to open and then want to drive on, the engine does not start again and the display says i must start the engine manualy!

Then i have to put in "N" or "P" so i can start my engine and drive away. Anyone had the same? Can ged you in a bit of a stressy situation in the city

Mine always stays off until next time I start the engine. As soon as I fire up I automatically press the off button and can then forget about it until next time.

Another nutty green issue for the eco-dims! To have even a tiny effect they would have to learn how to prevent volcanoes for a start.

I used to do that on mine but it used to set itself back on from time to time. VCDS has cured that. Now it never stops until I turn the ignition off :)

I think you missunderstand my problem here. Not the start stop system itself stops but my engine gets turned off by the start stop but won't start by it's self again.

You will be requested to start manually for seveal reasons:

    - If you open the drivers door

    - If you take off your seat belt (drivers belt)

    - If you move the gear from neutral whilst stopped

If you don't do any of these things there is perhaps a problem.

Does it always request a manual restart or only sometimes?

You're right! I stop the car in front of the automatic garagedoor and while i wait for it to open i undid my seatbelt. So that must be the reason it doesn't start again.

So i will have to undo my seatbelt before i stop completely or wait until i have parked my car.

@Gabbo: Thank you for the help

Wait till you've parked.

You're welcome.

The "deactivation conditions" for Stop/Start are based around the driver still being in control of the vehicle & are designed to stop someone "forgetting" its stopped & could restart on its own.

i.e.

The engine shouldn't restart when there is potentially no driver.

I think many cars with Stop/Start also have a bonnet switch to prevent similar problems when the car is in the garage or workshop.
