Running in - how much of a difference have you seen?

Featured Replies

Plenty of room, I've gone 30 miles with it showing zero range and only managed to get about 47l in to the brim.

If I fill up with it on zero range I get about 45l in, so I reckon there is 5l still in there at zero range.

  • bet he said it does 90 to the gallon and makes girls throw themselves at you too

  • not sure, I doubt it's a VAG thing. I guess they want people to believe that there cars are just as technically advanced as the ones from other companies, where dealers say the same thing. Now new eng

  • Oh it will do for sure. My current 2.0 150 wasnt good at all to begin with, still nothing like the manufacturers figure now (and I dont suppose ever will be) but im now seeing almost 50 mpg on every

Agree. I was getting fuel economy of almost 40mpg over 400 mile runs on the motorway by early September ( it was steadily improving each tank of fuel from about 2000 miles onwards). Then it started to get cooler, same run and I get about 35mpg now. I checked and inflated tyres which helped but my economy is way down now it's cooler.

Cold air = more power, but also Cold air is denser than warm or mild air and means its a thicker soup of air which your your car has to drive through.

+1 for Power & - 2 for denser air and more drag = slightly lower fuel economy!   (This is not very scientific, I am sure some out there will get better economy, I dont bother looking anymore and am happy averaging in the 50's at the moment.

I put the wind noise down to very thin glass, a lack of insulation and rock hard suspension.

VW couldn't possibly let its (now only just) cheaper cousin be as quite inside as the Golf VII?

So I'm still getting 38mpg (since start, since refuel and long term). Lots of urban driving but also some constant speed cruise. A handful of Regens when I have returned home but never has there been a warning on the maxi dot i need to 'perform' a Regen.

2ltr diesel Dsg with 2300 miles on the clock from new.

I hope the fuel economy improves over this.

How many miles do you get out of a tank of fuel (45l or so)

350 to 380 miles

And that is off of 45l of fuel?

That is pretty bad.

Yes, roughly. As you know it's impossible to achieve 50ltr capacity when refuelling.

It is bad I even mentioned to my dealer can I return this car and take a petrol version which would give me better economy ;-)

No it won't, trust me! (Unless you are Telboy, goodness knows how he gets the figure he does)  I didn't buy the tsi vrs looking for economy though  :D

Just got 499 miles off of 48l, 47.2mpg so yours looks like it has something wrong.

What is your average speed in your long term trip computer? Mine was 30mph so I have been doing more shorter journeys than usual, on the last car I was nearer 40mph and averaging a shade over 50mpg in a CR150 DSG.

I didn't buy a vrs though. I have another car for fun driving which can almost achieve the mpg of the octavia.

24 mph so a little less than yourself

Fingers crossed it will improve.

After 10,000miles you might see a small increase in fuel economy (2 or 3mpg) but its not going to increase 10mpg.

Having driven only Ford diesels before getting the Octavia (Focus & Mondeo) I'm achieving >5mpg better in my vRS Octavia than I did in a 2L focus.

Do these diesels need priming if they run dry?

No, all modern common rail diesels should stop the engine before the fuel-tank is completely dry (usually preceeded with a simulated mis-fire to make you feel like its running out of fuel).

The high pressure pumps are lubricated by the fuel flowing through them & can be very quickly damaged if run without fuel.

So if you drive at a constant speed between 50mph and 70mph to your destination mpg will be good. If your driving cannot achieve the constant speeds then your buggered? With a diesel no better than a petrol. Oh dear...

To be fair my focus tdci mpg is far far superior to the octavia.

Hopefully it's just technical problem the dealer can sort. Fingers crossed.

I don't have any experience with the Octy in 150bhp, and the fuelly site is rather confusing.

The german equivalent is spritmonitor.de and looking at the DSG 2.0 TDI with 150bhp I have found the following: Link

in mpg (UK) this should be: min: 54 avg: 46 max: 32

So basically even the greatest yahoo has better economy than you have to there has to be something wrong. I would definitely speak to my dealer if I were you.

It is with dealer right now. Hopefully it can be fixed but first the car needs a respray under warranty (4 month old car).

Regarding the original thread subject, I am now past the first 1000 miles, and it is getting better and better.
