vRS R?

Featured Replies

I was musing with my other half about our next car the other night, and I've started laying the foundations for the vRS R.  I currently have the vRS TDi whilst she has a Clio both on PCP.  Their expiry's coincide, and I suspect my current 18k mile per year commute will be on the train to London, so we'll look to consolidate to one silly car.  We'll need a four door, so the 370Z I lust after is probably off the agenda....

Are there any news on this model?  I very much like the look of the new Civic Type R, but I've fallen hard for my current vRS, even forgiving it for the diesel clatter as it coughs towards the red line.  What's on the wish list?

For me:

  • Sub 6 seconds 0-62 time
  • Challenging for record around the Nurburgring for front-wheel drive - I believe Honda are aiming for this with the Civic.
  • Electric memory seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Dials glow red when in Sport or vRS mode ala the VXR range
  • Sound system - nick the Bose from Audi perhaps?  Canton is reasonable, but could have a little extra oomph
  • Green brake calipers
  • Black pack, sunset glass, flat-bottomed vRS R logo wheel all as standard

Probably getting ahead of myself, but the other hot models in the VAG range are somehow a little boring and boxy.

My other half is still on a provisional, so hopefully the insurance group will be ludicrous so she won't be able to use it....

Super! IIRC Jon, used to get into the 8mins in a tdi Octy elegance (modified) on the ring, 8:50's ring a bell... not sure what the record actually is, ok 7.54.

Amended spec might get close ;)

That new civic R looks fantastic, not for it's looks either.

I like the leon cupra and (needing an estate) was interested in the suggestion that a cupra St might be on the cards.

VRS r?

More info please?

Golf r in an octavia costume. Would sell like hot cakes

All I've seen of this is this story back in May. Would be awesome (particularly if it got Haldex four wheel drive). Knowing my luck, the official announcement will be made the day I take delivery of my vRS TDI! http://www.pistonheads.com/news/30286.htm

You could be right, but would it loose too much perceived quality when compared to a Golf R?

DC

Would sell more than the golf. Interested now

Probably won't happen and if it does I doubt it will be what we hope it will be.

Though if it does have 4wd and is a right price it may change my mind on leaving Skoda

I'm sure I've read it on here, was convinced it was coming....  I'm off to cry myself to sleep.

The vRS TDi is a great car, but I'd like a greater surge towards the red line - enough to chew the face of anyone who dares suggest they bought the vRS for the spec rather than performance...!

I know, I know.... the TSi.  Damn my commute!

I like the Octavia but have to say space aside Id (cost being little or no object) still rather have a Golf or A3.

If I were looking at a quicker VAG car then I think a Golf R 5 door or S3 Sportback/saloon, maybe a Leon Cupra 280 would be on my radar.

To buy (but not lease) the Golf is overpriced though...would have an S3 for that reason alone...also likely to obtain a better deal on the S3 as its arguably a little less popular.

The Leon is v good value for money but I dont expect it will be a good bet residually, though Autocars Steve Sutcliffe loved it and reckoned it was a touch quicker than the Golf despite its power deficit.

Over all of them though I still think Id rather have an M135i, its rear wheel drive, marginally quicker than the Golf, sounds incredible (even though some of the interior noise is fake) and actually quite affordable to buy as BM seem to give good discounts now.

I've gone 1-series > Octavia due to kids getting bigger... there's no way we could live with a 1-series now as it is just tiny.  But I did test drive an M135i last year, and it is indeed an awesome car - but I'd go for the M235i, it's apparently an even better drive.  Having said that, if I was after a weekend car then it would be a Caterham!

I had a 135i and can confirm it's awesome!
However, I now have an Audi S1, and part of the selection choice for that included the Golf R or S3. The Golf R/S3 on PCP are very competitive owing to their strong residuals, but on top of that I prefer them to the BMW, just a more rounded car, I'd also recommend the DTUK box for them (takes them to 360bhp) and it makes them quicker than the BMW (not that there is much in it stock), the boys on the R Forum have been going nuts for them!

In your position it would be a mildly tuned S3 for me come new car time, very slightly more expensive than the Golf R, but worth it for the Audi interior (it really is a peach on the current A3).
BMW do discounts, but their residuals are CRAP, so on PCP I suspect the VAG options are equal or cheaper.

I really don't see Skoda doing an R version, and if they do it will be Leon spec, and I don't care what they say, 280bhp FWD is not an option in my world. The Golf R is already stealing sales from Audi (and becoming rather common all garden!), no way VAG will undercut that further with a 4x4 300bhp Octy - however, if they do, it would take my interest. The S3 is so minutely more expensive than the Golf R it seems dumb to me that people buy the Golf R (maybe they didn't research it properly), but if the Octy vRS R was even cheaper it might be worth a shout with significant savings over the S3.

Me too, but not if it was raining!

I did my research (lots of it!) and chose the Golf R over the S3.

As you said yourself, strong residuals make the Golf R very competitive when financing / leasing, so it can really widen the gap on the costs between the 2 cars.

Whilst I agree with you that the interior on the S3 is much nicer than the Golf (I came from an S4 with Supersports seats & all the gadgets), the Golf R is all about the handling. It is much more focused and precise than the S3.

Both are great cars but in terms of driver experience the Golf R wins every time :)

With twin fireblade engines, not for the power mind, just for that exhaust note at the redline

Surprised to hear you say they are different to drive - I drove both in the same day, they were the same to me. And on top of that, I know for a fact they use the same EVERYTHING underneath (shocks/springs, engine, gearbox, steering rack etc etc).

I would agree at certain spec's you can make a gap between them in cost, but on the whole I was looking at £20-30pcm different which is basically nothing at this level of car.

In the end I didn't want to be labelled a 'Golf driver' (as not many people will realise how awesome it is underneath) - and now you see the Golf R all over the place I am even more glad I went for the uber rare S1! This is in part I think due to coming from an SQ5, which no one realised what it was and labelled it a 'school Mum car' - well, until you put your foot down and the (fake) V8 thunder came out the exhaust - I needed a shouty on the outside car this time!

I'm surprised you find them exactly the same to drive. All the reviews I've read always put the Golf R ahead of the S3 in terms of drivability :)

Being labelled an Audi driver isn't anything to brag about :D

My last car was an S4 and TBH I don't feel any less special being a Golf driver.

It's a nice idea the vRS-R but can't see it happening tbh.

There maybe not a huge difference between a Golf R and an S3 on PCP but if you consider leasing the gap is a lot wider (and used to be huge when the ultra cheap R deals were on).

You mean when VW messed up and were offering it for 3 months down and £220pcm on a lease to individuals, but it was supposed to be a business option only, and actually retracted the offer from a large number of people that had signed up as they didn't want to sell them that cheap!?

Totally agree with your comments, having research all the aforementioned alternatives and other more expensive options not mentioned.(PM'd to Furbytom recently)

It wasn't VW that messed it up, it was VWFS. They are the group financing arm used by all of the VAG group. So whilst I agree they made a mess of that particular campaign, it could have been with any of the brands.

There were also a lot of other lease deals that were not funded by VWFS.

These legitimate personal leases were being offered at the same prices as the business leases.

Due to the mess that the 'business leasegate' malarkey created I don't think many people actually realised there were as good deals available with non-VWFS funded leases.

Are you guys really that serious the S3 is that much better interior wise than the Golf too?

The fact that the Audi has that stupid pop up screen that goes above the dash compared to the Golfs i.e VRS touch screen is just a big fail IMO. Really its just minimalistic vs functional as a point of differance.

Over here price isn't even close either, VRS is $47k , GTI golf is $61k, PP is $64k, Golf R is $68k and the S3 hatch  is $79k sedan is $86k!!!!

Same thing GTI vs VRS, apart from their being more colour there is no perceivable quality difference in the GTIs cabin over the Octavias either. Its got everything chromed lined, yay, and  flashy too busy steering wheel but apart from that its the same controls etc and the Octavias instruments are better to look at too. At least we don't have to put up with the stupid speedo calibration change at 100kph that the VW has too.

Seems like brand snobbery to me?

If the VRS R comes out anywhere half decent pricing wise and AWD it will just about set a new category compared to these, size wise its in another dimension. Budget S4 anybody?

I own an Audi and a Skoda, don't think you can call it brand snobbery. The long and the short of it is the Skoda is cheaper as they have cut MANY small corners off the quality - the biggest things I notice is the much cheaper plastic in the Skoda and the much nicer (real) leather in the Audi. It's also little things like the lack of bonnet gas struts on Skoda's.

I agree there is some disparity in technology which I also don't understand, Audi are stuck in the past with the lack of touch screen. But overall the nicest place to be in descending order is Audi, VW, Skoda...
