Moving old e-mail to a new computer

Featured Replies

My new computer should be arriving soon and I was wondering, what is the easiest way to move all the old e-mail stored on the old computer to the new computer?

All I can think to do is send it all to myself again. Don't really want to do that, it might take ages. I've seen a product called "transfer my pc" that comes with some sort of cable. Should I use this? Anybody out there used it?

Thanks

Stuart

I'm using outlook express. Can you still do it the same way? it doesn't appear obvious.

I am using Gmail to archive copies of email. That way I can access past posts from any PC with internet access.

File - export - messages

Then File - import - messages on the new pc

You can, but it's fiddly:

You need to save all the files in c:\documents and settings\\application data\identities\{big long number} and copy them to your new computer - but in a different location. Then for each folder you want to reinstate, create a new one in Outlook Express with the same name, close Outlook Express, then copy the old files into that folder, overwriting the new ones. That usually works.

IIRC there is a little programme in XP that will do this for you - just join the pcs together through a network or just using a network cable. (Or maybe you can put it on a CDR and then run it on the old computer to pick up files then run it on new one to import them) Anyway I am sure it was easy when I changed my computer a couple of years ago (at that trime I was using Outlook Express) Try searching help file.

The file and settings transfer wizard.

The file and settings transfer wizard.

Thats the jobby! And pretty easy to use IIRC

I've pretty much followed doc zoidberg's way. Time will tell if it works.

At least now i can burn them to cdr if only so i have a copy for posterity.

Thanks for all the replies tho
