sorry forgot to add

drives perfect & smooth, and doesn't  appear to have any noise from flywheel area

Could be camshaft sensor

Try getting car scanned with VCDS

thanks Mike

as with you I can live with the slow starting ok, but I am just getting concerned about the rough idle

I will get battery checked 1st

then as suggested by other member, get it scanned with VCDS

Low cranking speed when hot ? On the 2.0 tdi the injector wiring requires disconnecting then crank it over when it's hot and read the cranking speed. Can't remember exact figure but think it's something like a minimum of 250 to 300 rpm. If yours reads low suspect starter motor or battery. You will not get a code for this btw.

thanks FLAPPERJACK7

will give it a try

I had the Hot Start issue on my 1.9 tdi Octavia. I've had a "Software" update at Shark Performance and touch wood it's cured it !
