Thats a good start to Christmas then 🙂 Just while I think of it, do the brakes "hum" when reversing? Seems to be blighting a lot of GTi owners on a Polo forum I joined, myself included. I had pads replaced recently and that cured the problem for a while but it has now returned 😞

Anyhow, all the best to you and the missus and long may you both enjoy the Polo 🙂

What does your VW dealership say about it , "Light rusting" on the disc, with low use" as I have heard that one from a friend of mine. If anything he says he gets a grating  sound going forward as well but less pronounced than when reversing. Was the changing of the pads advised by the VW service engineer or did you just try it?

You surprise me, with your car probably being in daily use ,similar to my partners.

If I had a criticism with brakes on the Polo GTi, it's with a snatching on the front brakes when applying light initial braking pressure.

Guess the forum guys need to present a YouTube video of the noise and expose the "Humming " noise you mention. Then VW might get forced into some rectification action.

It's a bit like asking VW UK CS for a disclosure of numbers of owners mentioning this issue.

Hi all   Gave the Polo a quick single wash yesterday - don't want to do too much work as I have the car being detailed next week and want to leave the paintwork as untreated as possible until then.

Mate, when your previous car was a 60bhp Citigo, believe me the Polo GTI is "blistering"

I took it to the dealership a few months after buying it and they chamfered the pads to see if that helped, made no difference, a few months later they reset the ABS until to see if that helped, again no change. I left it for a while as I was very busy and then went in for service and requested pads be changed. I didn't realise until recently they changed them as "goodwill" due to the pads being out of warranty.

The pads fixed the problem for a couple of months but it's back to usual now, I spoke to the main technician there and he suggested driving around 50mph and braking hard a few times, I don't know whether I need to get the ABS working for that or not but I tried hard braking without activating ABS and that made no difference either.

I have read the link Roottootemoot posted and that confirms what I have read before, it's not just a Polo issue, but I hadn't read about copperslip or spraying between the pads and caliper as it is caused by resonance, I will have a look to see if it is accessible without removing wheels, I have sprayed loads of wheel cleaner on and rinsed well with no luck, just so annoying!!!

Loads of wheel cleaner might be good for cleaning wheels or actually good at cleaning and bad for wheels depending on what it is.

As to helping brakes probably not, it could do the same job as 'Brake Cleaner' removing oil / grease / grime / brake dust.

When you use Brake Cleaner to service brakes you then lube correctly, like sliding pins, back of pads, or what ever.

Best ask about the TPI from VW and any software update.

Merry Xmas all and a happy new year.

Root toot am a wa.

It was KKD Brakeaway I used, I can now understand that wouldn't help as it would clean away anything useful as much as it would clean away anything bad.

Dealership says there is no update as yet, in the UK anyway. It's defintely not realeasing enough though as it makes the noise mainly in reverse but also when moving forward after reversing. If I have any luck I will post back here.

All the best to you too 🙂

Sorry but video seems to cut short or interference.

No change to the mooing brake situation unfortunately, it's a general crap brake setup with these Polo's to be honest.

From new the handbrake cables have had problems with being stiff and graunchy, knocking due to brake pad carriers that are/were ill fitting and the mooing, which seems isolated to the GTi models.

As my first experience of a genuine VW I must say it has been frustrating and slightly soured the enjoyment of the car.

Read the other day that the VW Polo GTi is being discontinued.

Is this right?

Even the owner of Apex Taxi's can have fun in a 197bhp Polo. His other cars include a McLaren 720S.:whew:

Where did you read that?

I have not seen, heard or read that.

But then VW Group are getting Social Media Space talking up their 'Performance Models' that will sell in low numbers, while not discussing the need to get low average emissions and how difficult that will be without getting the Mild Hybrids, Plug ins and Full EV's actually built and sold.

They have many of the models with higher C02 g/km test results to discontinue in the coming year.

I read it in a communication from Carwow but I can’t find any mention anywhere else.

Only India where it is not available anymore because it too expensive for the local market there.;)

Just seen an article on Google re. India but It was from 2018.

This has only appeared on Carwow since the easing of lockdown. I had offers before lockdown but no mention of discontinuing.

The offers I’ve received now are more expensive than before lockdown by about £1500.

Just sit tight...with new car registrations down by 97% on this time last year, they will be screaming fir your money and manufacture/supplier offers will start coming through.

Yes best see how things pan out.  All about supply and demand I suppose.  👍

Good evening, bit of a strange question but hopefully you might know.

I have a Polo R-Line with 17 inch alloys and full size spare tyre, I also have the GTi with 17 inch alloys but only a space saver.

Today I have a puncture in the GTi and was wondering if I can use the full size spare from the other car instead of the space saver? I would imagine yes but don't want to try it and then find out I can't as the depth is different or something like that, surely they're interchangeable?

Thank you for any advice.

EDIT SOLVED

Answer is no, not able to use the other wheel as the brakes are too big on the GTi

Edited by MilgeS

?

What size was that 'Full size spare wheel and tyre' that the Polo R-Line has?

I take it it is not 'The same size as the 17" Alloys and tyres that the car wears.

?

Did you actually try it on the GTI so that you know it does not clear the brakes?

Just get a full size alloy then with a tyre that matches the 4 the GTI has and use that as a spare.

Well it's still a "spare" type wheel with speed limited to 50mph but has a higher side wall, the GTi one is only a tiny sidewall.

I tried it but it wouldn't clear the larger discs, I'll look into a spare alloy so it's a straight swap in future, usually I just get it changed but my tyre man isn't available until next week and I'm wary about other fitters scratching my wheels.

Thank you for replying

BRISKODA For sales a perfect place to maybe get 1 alloy with tyre.  Or even maybe a pair off alloys for 1 in each car.
