Run tyre compressor from battery?

Featured Replies

I've previously used a small tyre compressor to inflate tyres. It came with crocodile clips to connect to the car battery.

Anyone aware of any reason why this couldn't also be used on a MkIII ?

Wouldn't it be easier to fit one of the usual cylindrical connectors and run it off the 12 volt socket in the central moulding of the car?

Thanks for the suggestion ednmra. It's an option but if I can run it direct from the battery, it saves a trip to the shop to get a cylindrical plug :)

Some compressors draw quite a lot of current which is why they often fit them with alligator clips instead of standard plugs. It is certainly less convenient direct from the battery but gaining access to the 12 volt socket fuse is a bigger pita if it blows.

I've blown the fuse twice using my pump from the 12V socket so invested in........ a 12V socket attached to crocodile clips to go straight onto the battery :)

Haven't used it yet on this one, but my Halfords compressor ran every week from the socket of my Mk. 2 without trouble.

I have regularly used a Ring Automotive RAC610 compressor on my Octy2,  Octy 3 and Fabia for a number of years without any issues.

I believe most compressors draw around 10amps, and I think that the 12V socket on the Octy is rated at 15amp(?).

The connector for my Ring compressor has an inbuilt replaceable 10amp fuse so in theory that should blow first and well before the fuse in the vehicle fuse-box.

Personally I would avoid like the plague connecting crocodile clips to the battery, but each to his own.

I have a 10A inline fuse on my pump - it still blew the 15A one under the glovebox.  On a positive note, I have now got the knack of taking it off and getting it back on within a few seconds to change fuses.

Do you have the START/STOP system? I just read in the manual that the jump-start and charging procedures are slightly different if you have START/STOP. I wondered if this also applies in this case.

I'd suggest the original tyre pump skoda supply.

It hasn't blown a fuse yet, and it's the best quality one I've ever had.

Inflated my work mates range rover tyres in a few minutes, even though he had about three punctures in it!

Yes, got SS, but I can't see how it would affect it.  I haven't yet used the croc clips on the car as I have now bought a Ring pump (Auto Express best buy, apparently) and have not yet needed it.

Sorted now with Ring pump.  Not seen the Skoda one. The Ring is quite big and only just squeezes into the cubby hole in the boot (only got one due to Canton)

You need to use the negative terminal on the bulkhead by the battery, not the negative battery terminal.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
