Steering wheel damage

Featured Replies

Just noticed some damage to the bottom back side of my steering wheel, never noticed it before (although I rarely feed the steering wheel, so don't usually notice).

Doesn't strike me as damage I would be able to cause in that spot, but wanted some opinions.

7months, 10k.

And no one else drives it (apart from the dealership when it's broken, again).

I'm a welder/engineer. Wearing rings would be a big mistake for me, and painful.

If this scarring is on the driver's door side when the wheel is at rest, could it be caused by rough clothing such as denim jeans rubbing there as the driver gets in or out? Just an idea, as what your pic shows seems to be a rubbing motion, but one with some pressure behind it?

Or possibly a metallic zipper on some piece of clothing has scraped it when getting in/out of the car.

What ever it was, a fair bit of pressure was used. More importantly what are you planning to do about it. Unless it has just come back from the dealers after a fix/service I do not fancy your chances of getting it fixed FOC by the dealer.

My wife caused the same type of damage to my S60 with her rings but higher up on the left and no way near as serve.

Let us know how you get on.

The leather on the wheel is crap on most VAG cars, very easily marked. Has been the case on the past number of VAG cars (not just Skoda) that Ive had.

Ive scratched mine already a few times, i tend to catch my legs against the bottom of the wheel getting in and out, if wearing something hard wearing like jeans and you catch the wheel at the right angle with sufficient pressure that kind of thing will happen.

Massaging it with some leather cream and some cannily applied black polish will hide most of it.

Its fair to say that you'd never be able to prove that happened at the dealers, unless you want to go to the trouble and expense of replacing the wheel thats your only choice to get it perfect again but it will probably only happen again in future.

My car came from new with a big score along the bottom of the door card where it had obviously been treated carelessly during transit but same deal, proving that and getting SUK to cough up for a new (400 quid) door card was never going to happen.

It's exactly where my right knee sits while driving, so I doubt I'll get them to fix it.

However the interior is wearing horribly!

Carpets wearing badly next to the accelerator, gear stick wobbles like my 14yr old golf did, everything marks so easily.

Hopefully ill push to get the car replaced with the electrical/mechanical problems I'm having again.

Agreed it doesnt feel quite as solid as my end of the line Mk2 vRS did, and overall not a patch on the MK6 Golf GT I had prior. That car had some embarrasing early life warranty issues and developed a few rattles but after 50k miles it still felt overall very tight and much like new particularly to drive; particularly given it had been a company car and relatively speaking whilst well looked after had been given quite a hard life. Very little wear and tear in the cabin; dont think my Mk3 would fair anything as well if subjected to the same over 2.5 years/50k miles.

Same sort of damage on the left underside of the leather MFSW on my new Rapid Spaceback Black Edition... but didn't notice it until after a few weeks so no chance of recourse with the dealer, but can't see it unless I look for it and can't feel it unless I run the wheel through my hands... so slightly annoying... but no biggie!

I did the same with my mk2 Octy, now with my Mk3. Caused by finger nails. Difficult to say how exactly, except that I new the time I did it.

Two nasty gashes have also appeared on mine, I've honestly got no idea how they happened. One is at the very top of the steering wheel, it's really odd.

I put two in the side of the steering wheel of the elegance (I think it was an elegance...) I had on loan while my vrs arrived. Had no idea how I did the first one and was really bummed. Then a second one appeared! The only thing I could put it down to was a zip on a puffer jacket I wore sometimes. A slightly rotund stomach covered by a puffy jacket meant I may have grazed the wheel as I entered the drivers seat. If the zip bit was in the wrong place it might have caught the wheel. I'm not sure what sort of vinyl they put on the wheel (certainly didn't look like leather) but it's unbelievably soft. I've had the same jacket and stomach for about 3 (of my own) cars and I've never had anything like it!

Luckily I haven't have an issue with the vRS mfsw, it seems a different material.
