(micro oops) SD cards - not bought one in ages

Featured Replies

Any recommendations for decent quality and value? :)

Looking for an 8gb one to take the strain off the internal memory in my Xperia Z3, and also a 16gb, maybe 32gb for my recently acquired gopro.

Edited post as the original would have been of no use to you.

I think you need a micro SD in both cases. Just google it and pick one up that has decent ratings on Amazon.

I'd strongly advise against eBay, as I have been recently been sold fake SD cards by 2 different sellers. Unbeknown to me, it is apparently big business. They then play all innocent and beg you not to leave negative feedback!

http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ - you won't go far wrong with their own brand stuff.

Try 7dayshop or Mymemory

Both quick and reliable in my experience - stick to brand names as opposed to own brand and you can't go far wrong

Sorry, title should have said MICRO sd.... :D

Your phone can take Micro SD XC also up to 128gb. I have a SanDisk 64gb one it's spot on.

This Samsung one seem epic value though! (£5 cheaper than on MyMemory) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Memory-MicroSDXC-without-Adapter/dp/B00J2BSW9O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1418340417&sr=8-2&keywords=64gb+micro+sd

This is the one I have (£5 cheaper than on Amazon) http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDXC/SanDisk/SanDisk-64GB-Mobile-Ultra-Micro-SD-%28SDXC%29-Card---Class-10-UHS-1-%2B-SD-Adapter

It's a shame your only a 'Super Moderator' as we can all edit our own titles :P

Oh also apps like app2SD can be handy to free up space once you get one and copy over whatever apps can be onto the memory card rather than the devices own memory and keep it running nice and smooth.

This is the plan. My app manager keeps saying I can move stuff but no card. Have now purchased from Kingston via Amazon. Class 4 16gb card for my phone as wont be stressed and a class 10 32gb for the gopro.

It's fine to buy off ebay but the first thing I'd do is run h2testw on the SD card to make sure it has the advertised capacity and is able to write at the correct speed.

If it's not up to scratch, raise a complaint with the seller and then follow the ebay returns procedure. At least for me it for free postage back to the seller so I can only assume ebay charged them for it?

Simples!

That's exactly what I did, but why would you knowingly choose to go through all that faff when you can buy with confidence from a trusted vendor, such as the examples mentioned?

I find it less hassle to have a single ebay account with my address and paypal set up than signing up for various websites that I will probably only use once.

Real cards aren't hard to find on ebay and tend to be about the same price or slightly cheaper in my experience. Just avoid the super cheap ones and no matter where you buy, make sure you check it first.

Absolutely spot on advice, last time I bought a memory card on ebay I was stung like this and used h2testw in 2007 (was a £70 card at time :o ). Hacked fake cards are a pain and with ebay feedback on memory cards means nothing, as most leave it because they do not realise they are fake at all sadly :( The advice to check cards from anywhere is also important as even Amazon have unknowingly sold some themselves (not thrid party sellers but Amazon themselves). Simply putting the card into a device and looking at the details of said card seeing the amount you have paid for is not a way or establishing if it is genuine. Hacked cards tend to be smaller memory cards that display a higher capacity and essentially loop record and overwrite the existing data time and time again until it reaches the required amount, resulting in total loss.

I was going to suggest steering clear of Ebay, but tbh just stick to known brands.

Ebay is flooded with cheap Chinese sdcards that are doctored to look bigger than they really are.

I'd check the deal websites sdcard offers are posted pretty regularly. An 8Gb is going to be pennies these days. Might be worth looking at how big a card your device can take. I've picked up a 32Gb for about £10 recently from Amazon.

There are more counterfeit branded ones than anything else these days on there, cards and packaging themselves are very very well done. Lets face it they all come from China branded or not so it's not hard for it to be done.

You don't need registration with Mymemory. Just pick what you want and pay with PayPal.

If anything, it's actually less hassle than eBay.

I would always steer clear of Ebay for this - far too easy to get scammed with hassle sorting it out.

I have tended to buy on Amazon or 7Dayshop with no hassles and the right memory turning up - I always buy Sandisk, Lexar or Samsung though and always class 10 - for the difference in price of a class 4 and a class 10, why not go for it?

+ 1 for avoiding ebay, and if you use amazon only go for sold by amazon and not 'fulfilled by amazon" as the ebay fakes are now appearing there.....

I am hoping to by going through Kingston on Amazon, I should get decent quality. :)

I havent managed to get a genuine SD card out of a chinese supplier all year, and I HAVE tried some of the highest rated companies!!!!

DOnt buy sevendayshops own brand, I have had all sorts of issues, from the cards dying after attempting to load them, to cards suddenly dropping from class10 to less than class one, to the replacements for the first two faults falling apart after 6 months.

The plastics are too soft, the write protection tabs fell off first, then the separators between the terminals broke off.

The best cards I have come across in the last two years are Samsung metal clad 32GB cards - I am just bummed that I have managed to lose one. Consistently fast read and write speeds well above class10 minimum.

I have also recently bought a 64GB AData USB3 flash drive that gives over 20Mbps on USB2, and over 60Mbps on USB3.

Kingston are good, so are SanDisk, I also have 7DS own brand which are OK.

Amazon are doing a 64Gb MiSDXC card for £22 & £26 without or with adaptor.
