Does the Mk 3 have electrical problems?

Featured Replies

Over the last three weeks I’ve had some problems with the electrics.

First was the electrical breakdown two weeks ago (quickly sorted by Skoda assistance), then the head light failure warning display last week (all lights ok) which took a couple of days but was sorted by Henry’s Glasgow (great company very impressed).

Tonight on the way home from the office with the fuel range down to 20 miles, stopped for fuel after which the fuel range displayed instead of reading approx. 250 miles read 0 miles. (All the other functions work ok).

Used the car a lot tonight visiting customers and constantly checked the fuel range which still reading 0 miles (sensor fault?).

Ok, so no big deal I can live without a fuel range display, however, having three electrical problems in three weeks doesn’t inspire confidence in the  integrity of the cars electrical system.

Is electrical issues common with the mk 3?

It so annoying as I still really like the car.

Is your fuel gauge working ok?

Unfortunately with ever more increasing computerised systems on cars a software bug or bad connection somewhere can cause strange issues, very rarely will they strand you somewhere but they will be annoying.  It's amazing how many people on here have taken there cars into dealers for problems and a software update has fixed it!

Genuine faulty parts are quite rare but do make it through production checks sometimes.

Other than the odd little glitch here and there (nothing unusual with VAG cars, particularly with the amount of electronics they now employ) mines been pretty faultless in 10 months/15k miles.

Once the little niggles are sorted out I expect the car will be reliable and you'll forget all about it. Its those that have had fairly serious problem after problem with theirs and have had to resort to fighting with dealers/SUK to reject the vehicles I feel really quite sorry for; that experience must really take all of the shine out of new car ownership.

I occasionally get some errors on the dashboard when starting the car - typically they are 'start stop error', 'tpms error' and 'traction control error'. They all go out after 10 secs or so once the readout has told me about them in order.

Turning off and restarting the car doesn't always fix it - but i don't actually think there is a problem.

However, when the start stop error shows you can't use start stop.

I cant say I have had any electrical problems with mine so far but will keep an eye out. Hope you get yours sorted!

In 6 months of ownership mine has been okay bar about 3 times the bolero has had a Petit mal and taken 5 minutes to do anything.

No electrical faults here, 28k miles/18 months of ownership.

Only fault ever arisen is airbag warning light coming on and the dealer cleared this.

faulty screen ....kept freezing and ringing people up by it self

new screen fitted been fine since

Thanks for the replies, looking like I’ve just a wee bit unlucky.

To be fair to Skoda after speaking to a couple of  neighbours who both run Nissans they both have had electrical issues in one case back at the dealers 5 times so Skoda is not alone.

I know we go on about cars being electronically complex, however, they are not that complex the data communication between modules is well established in the electronic / computing industry.

I think it’s the old problem of car electronics being designed by engineers and costed by accountants plus a low understanding of electronics and systems by most (not all) car mechanics employed in franchised dealerships.

Ho hum, now for the onslaught from all the mechanics on the forum!

just over a year and 22.5k miles and no problems to report, hope you get yours sorted mate.

My first car was replaced due to start stop errors.

Second one is still at the dealer with start stop errors, AND battery draining down while parked!

I don't mind though, less miles on mine and potentially another new replacement.

Only problem is the loan car has a tracker on it! No fun.

Just noticed the neither 12v sockets don't work on the car. Has anyone had experience of this? I'll be ringing the dealer in the morning!!

Have you checked the fuse?

Impressive that without using the 12v sockets the fuse managed to blow. Fingers crossed it's sorted now. Bit of a bugger getting the glove box out though!!!

Thanks for the tip. Idiot that I am I should have tried that first!
