New EGR valve - cost?

Recommended Posts

Hi

We have a Skoda Ocativia diesel and have had 2 amber warning lights coming on and off intermittently - the glow plug one and the exhaust one. We have been told by the dealer that the EGR valve needs replacing and that this will cost £800 - this seems like a lot! Does that sound likely? Thanks for any help!

(I'm new here)

I had exactly the same warning lights after a weasel chewed through a sensor pipe and an electrical wire. May be worth a look around the engine bay for damaged pipes or wiring before actually spending any money.

Can you let us know the engine code? £800 is way too much for what it is.

The part is around £300 to 400. It's at the back of the engine best to remove the Subframe , steering rack, osf driveshaft then the diesel particulate filter after all that it's ....relatively easy to replace the egr valve.! Put everything back together re check the alignment.

Do you know ops car or just making an assumption that it is scout with egr on the back of engine? Most Octavia's engines has the egr easily accessible either on front of the engine or sitting on the back-left corner.

If it is a common rail engine the egr cooler is at the back of the engine on all these engines, the price the op has been quoted suggests to me it is a cr engine.

For £800 it's on the back of the engine!

I was quoted £720 for having the egr cooler replaced on our cr TDI vRS at a main Skoda dealer. A local vag specialist then quoted me £650.

Are talking about a EGR Valve or EGR Cooler?

Two very different things.

The EGR valve should be located at the front of the engine and has 3 bolts holding it in. It can usually be cleaned by yourself and then replaced.

If you want a replacement EGR valve then that two is fine and would expect to pay no more than about £80 for it.

£800 for an EGR? Cannot be correct!

if its a PD you would Surely as i and many many others have done, dont replace it get rid of it get it mapped out.

All can be done for less than £200 think of the savings later on having to sort more out when the VVT gets all gunked up.

Skoda Octavia TDi 2.0L. 12 plate. 83000 miles. I have just had my EGR valve and cooler replaced by a local trusted Bournemouth  (Winton) independent. Total cost including diagnostics, £684. There seems to be a lot of cheaper parts out there but I trust the garage and dont want to be having to do this job again any time soon. Labour took 3 hours after diagnosis and my agreement to proceed with work.

2014 2ltr octavia 3 EGR

Sorry but it's a big job with quite a few components needing to be removed from the engin to gain access. Also you need to tackle it from underneath. It's not really a DIY job you need to be a competent mechanic. Time a day first time.  My local gararge of 40years would prefer not to do the job......
