remember, the weights are the MAM (Maximum authorised mass) ie. Our Twin-Axel iFor williams box trailer, tips the scales at 700kg's empty - however, it's max weight is 2700kg's - therefore, way out of my wife's (no B+E) licence range even when empty!

  • Yes. Its only when it strays over 3.5 ton that an additional trailer licence is needed. Or atleast i think thats what my local training centre told me. The trailer test is about the same as the bi

  • The Yeti fits that category; a shade under 1500kg with a towing weight of 2000kg - do you know of one you could borrow?

  • My understanding (passed in 2011) is that you can have a train weight of up to 3500kg, but the towing limit of the towing vehicle mustn't be exceeded. So if you could find a 1500kg car with a towing l

Not much point towing a trailer if you cant put anything in it anyway lol

If you are not sure what your car can tow then check out Parkers Guide.

Look under car reviews and then facts and figures then select your vehicle and it should list the vehicle weight and towing weights.

Or the cars owners manual. Id check that first as id trust it.

Specs can vary from website to website sometimes (:

Ive never bothered with the trailer test, if I want to tow anything I just use a tractor, that takes your trailer weight from 750kg to 18290kg and a train weight of 24390kg on a standard car licence.

That said this weight limit is almost universally ignored by farmers. I know of folks who go to more than double the limit.

Im not able to drive a tractor on a standard cat b drivers license tho can I? .....

Lol

is this all about getting a FGF from Dorset? :D Rip the seats and unnecessary crap out of the FGF before you load it if George is going to track it anyway ;)

Lol

If you pass a regular car driving test (category B ) you’ll get entitlement to drive:

  • agricultural tractors (category F)

No, but look under your other categories. Im sure i can do it, n I've never taken a test on a tractor.

It just appears when you do your car test i think

I suspect though it would be quicker and cheaper to do the dam test if doing a journey of any length or hire a transporter (around £100/day up here).

Not allowed to go too far in a tractor iirc.

Just between fields n stuff i think

If your thinking about doing your B+E then it also might be worth checking the price differance between that and C+E

I did my trailer trailing and test with http://www.viamaster.co.uk/training-courses/

They used a ford ranger and a 12ft box trailer for the B+E

But if you did you C+E with them you use the same box trailer but drive a iveco van and that gets you 7.5ton licence plus trailer

Thats worth having IMO.

The 3.5 ton can be a pita on its own.

A long wheelbase vw transporter is over 3.5 ton fully laden. Its just over the limit, so us with a new licence cant drive one :(

if you provide the vehical, I can teach you B+E ;)

edit , or C, or C+E :)

Well at least this thread isnt full of incorrect info like they usually end up filled with.

Abit of clarity though.

As mentioned its all about plated weights. MAMs and unladed weights

If you have a unladed 1300kg car with a MAM of 1700kg

And a caravan that weighs 900kg with a MAM of 1200kg you can tow that on your B-licence.

Because the caravans maximum weight is less than the cars weight when empty AND both combined MAMs do not exceed 3500kg :)

If you have B+E licence your still restricted to 3500kg but you can tow a 1500kg trailer with a 1200kg car provided the car is rated.

*weights used as examples only*

If your tow vehicle is 3500kg your trailers limited to 750kg mam

If you are not sure what your car can tow then check out Parkers Guide.

Don't need to do that.

On the bottom of the drivers door B post is a label with all the relevant weights.

Does anyone want to explain about Trailers with Plated weights,

and towing them by some vehicles or licences even when they are empty. ?

Just interested on what people say on the subject.

So with just a cat b and not b+e I can drive a 1500kg Yeti (with towing capacity of 2000kg) with a 500kg trailer and a 1000kg car on the trailer

The b+e is only for if I wanted to tow the same weight of 1500kg when laiden with a vehicle over 3500kg. Correct?

Nope, you can go as far as you like. Some friends of mine took forage down to Somerset levels from Shropshire when the flooding was bad earlier in the year.

yep, true. I've seen tractors on the Dartford crossing/ QEII Bridge before now where the M25 becomes the A282 before becoming the M25 again lol

With the tractors they could do that and still use red Diesel as long as the reason was purely Agricultural.

Breakdown Truck recovery, hire & reward

& licencing and distances is a different matter. Transportation for Hire & reward as well.

I've never had heard of anyone having to use white derv in tractors. My employment is not agriculture yet we use tractors a lot and drive long distances on the road. We use the red and always have.

I once forget to fill up before a long trip and had to visit a petrol station and get white diesel. It was quite a costly error!

Currently red is 55ppl. So it's a LOT cheaper.

Going slightly OT here. Apologies!

Don't need to do that.

Very true but some just cant be bothered to look.

It also has all the info so you can check if you are thinking of changing vehicles.

Or is it the insurance that limits you then?

I cant remember :(
