Engine swap (2.0i instead of a 1.4 mpi)

Featured Replies

Hello world,

Since it's Christmas and I was looking for gifts, I've found a 2.0i 8V engine 85kw (I'm currently running on the prehistoric 1.4 mpi ATZ one).

I was wondering if this would be a straight swap or if I will need all the other things such as ECU, gearbox, drive shafts, wheel hubs, front breaks, radiator etc. I'm trying to right down a list of all the parts needed to sum them up and check if they can fit into my budget. Another thing would be .. are those engines built as tought as this one ? I know that the 1.4 with 16 valves can be problematic, but I didn't find anything solid about the 2.0 one.

You'd need pretty much everything! Engine, brakes, 'box, loom, ECU, radiator (best get the slam panel to save cutting the old one), clocks, ignition barrel (unless you've got access to what you need to recode the keys for the immobilizer), exhaust. If the exhaust on the 2.0 comes out the front and goes under the subframe you'll need that subframe as well. If it comes out the back and over the subframe you'll be fine to keep the one you've got. Probably best to get the rear beam with disc brakes and swap that over too so you need the hand brake cables to suit. Not sure about the drive shafts/hubs but probably best to grab them while you can!

'85 Kw' or as many as 113 horses or power =  Clydesdale not Mustang slayer.

Best just go out and buy another car, and get what you can for yours,

'price to change' very little,  head ache none.

I agree with Goneoffski, buy a fresh car instead.

Surely the labour time it would take you/someone else would equal a good lump sum towards a different, more powerful car anyway?

I've found one. Already placed some ads with mine.

The 2.0 8 valve engine really isn't all that clever; it's ancient, slow-revving, thirsty and incredibly heavy, it's much better suited to a bigger car due to the relatively flat torque curve.

Is it an OHC engine, as the mpi one ?

The mpi engine is an OHV design, the 2.0 is OHC

Yes, you are correct. I meant OHV  .. hmm .. but then why would it be slow revving ? I love the dynamics of this car and I just want more power, but I wouldn't go diesel with a TDI or a vRS model. It is an 8V engine, I admit, but in my knowledge it should be a workhorse. I also believe that with a bit of work, this engine might get close to 130bhp, as the standard vRS.

but then why would it be slow revving ?

Because it's a long stroke engine with a huge flywheel, anyone who's driven any 2.0 VW with that engine fitted would know this.

I guarantee you that fitting that engine in a Fabia will be a massive amount of work for nothing, it's a horrible engine in the Golf, great for towing and load lugging but thirsty and slow. Yes you can modify it but why would you bother, the 1.4 16v is a much better engine and much lighter and more economical.

Just because it's a 2.0 don't mean **** son.

I agree, been doing a similar project with Jamiempi from here. I've told him the 1.4 16v is a much better choice, people have them running 130bhp so still vrs power from a 1.4.

2.0 is old and slow, not a great engine.

1.8t is perfect if it's a proper project because it will need a lot of work, a good 12 month hobby project, not a quick 7 day turn around.

Since the 1.4 16v is already done in a fabia all the engine mounts, hubs and gearbox will all be a straight swap with no extra fabrication.

I see. Tbh, I tried a 2003/2004 Polo with the 1.4 16v engine and it didn't seem to be that fast .. it didn't impress me much, I cant't tell you why. Maybe the Fabia with the same engine is more agile. I will not be able to fit a 1.8t motore due to the laws around (and registration tax). It seems that I will deal with this thing later. I might keep it slowda and buy another one.

I hope Santa will get you fine gifts! Thanks again...and have a Merry Christmas !

I reckon over 150 bhp is easily achievable on motorcycle throttle bodies with a pair of cams and a decent exhaust, might need new rods and pistons to take the extra revs and a bit of quality headwork never does any harm, three-angle valve seats and a little tidying up on the short radius would do it.

Maybe even as much as 160 bhp at 8000 rpm.

Because most Polos have the 75 bhp engine is why!

2 choices

go out and buy a 2l fabia. Strip AALLLLL the parts and put onto your fabia. Messing around wjth headaches. Parts not coming apart abd goinf togethwr as they shoild. Parts that dont seem to want to ever fit. Part rhat you think (is this the 1.4 or the 2.0 part) then you end up with a 2l fabia and I scrap fabia.

orr

buy a 2l fabia and Insure it :D

It was a member on here had an ABT? Tuned 1.4 16v fabia, he had a list of work done.

-spark plugs and ht leads

-camshaft

-exhaust

-air filter

With a dunk print out of about 131bhp iirc.

I'll google about and see what I can find.

OR be REALLY outrageous and buy a 100bhp ATD deisel Fabia 60mpg pettey much bulletproof reliable and can be bought cheap as chips these days!!

Yeah, that's dyno bullsh*t right there, *sniffs

yeh. Just out of curiosity I went to a tuning place (well known for tuning and specialists in scoobies) and asked what they can do to my car .... fella reckoned good for 220 from just a remap and over 250 with a hubrid turbo fitted

so I wont be going there :P

Back in the 90s I bought a Fiesta si for the Mrs, I took it to Power Engineering in Uxbridge and asked them what they could do with it, the bloke said "Not a lot cos they are crap!!"....well I had to admire their honesty!!

Hilarious, dyno fairies make me laugh so much.

since it's all about 40% engineering and 60% economy, I will keep mine. The speed limits are incredible low here and we only have a few hundreds of miles of actual highways where I could 'floor' it with the legal 130kmph.Meh, I will buy a ticket to Spain with that money and have a vacation instead.
