Xenon and day running lights

Featured Replies

hi I have noticed the inside off my day running lights and head lights have what appears to be cloudy or maybe even condensation on the inside when cold weather conditions are here, is this ok or should the units be re sealed? Just don't know about this, thanks

There ideally shouldn't be any condensation inside the units... however, they're not airtight so it is entirely possibly that small amounts of moisture get in, especially (as you say) in this weather / at this time of year.  If they don't clear quite quickly (often difficult to tell unless you stop and get out to look), or if water starts to collect in the lights in any volume whatsoever, then it's time to get them looked at.

Thinking about it, mine could well be suffering from a little of this rather than it just being grime on the outside (my car is absolutely filthy at the moment).

Same with me in below freezing conditions the other day. Took several hours after stopping to clear.

Most cars suffer this issue. Started to occur when we went off the standard 7" round sealed beam units in the 1960/70's. Opel's answer to a Manta I had was to drill a hole in the bulb access cover.

As Wiggo says, if water collects, then there's a problem. Used to happen to caravan tail light units, answer to this was. Drill drain holes in the bottom.....

Mine did this yesterday after washing the car.  It was clear again this morning.

Mine does it after washing the car / headlight.

The condensation is noticeable at the bottom (LED DRL area).

As per replies above.

Had one of my headlight units replaced at circa 10k miles due to water ingress, shorting the DRL and displaying bulb out error on the infotainment.

If the unit is letting in water you will know. Fine mist is ok, but obvious water droplets and water pooling in the bottom of the DRL section of the light unit are not good - too much water will cause DRL error on the infotainment. Ensure that the rubber caps on the back of the headlight units are firmly attached.

The fogging on the Leon LED headlights is far worse as the unit doesn't generate the heat required to cause the moisture to evaporate.

Designers spend millions on new models, yet they still don't think of curing the old issues that had dogged cars of all makes for years. They will probably just move the LED's to the top of the units so the tide can come right in......
