  • I'm not sure I'd mind about the noise if I had a car which can lap the Nordscheife in under 8 minutes (not many family hatches can do that) Sometimes it's better not to draw attention to yourself

  • Keith, this is a seat thread. You've already got a Golf one, now bugger off!

Just to carry on from some octavia talk previously on here.

Just seen the new octavia on facebook.

230bhp

0-60 in 6.7 seconds

Once again why on earth do these Road testers have no taste sonically! The engine sounds great in natural comfort mode, and sounds silly in cupra mode. The golf is the same, I wish you could turn the sound off and the throttle response on!

You can with VCDS... gonna do it in mine (well turn it down to about 50% or so). I think the most annoying thing about the fake sound is the exhaust makes an awesome noise on change up which gets hidden with the piped in sound. But its not "that" bad really (tbh, im in eco mode most of the time haha)

ECO mode, what is that then? :)

I know you can turn it down / off but I don't have VCDS or know anyone local that does. TBH I cant tell the difference between sport and cupra, though comfort is indeed a bit too soft. Eco is just plain wrong :)

The stock exhaust sounds better in the car than out. On the rollers it just got very loud, no real exhaust bark at all.

On the golf R it just seems very quiet, early gear changes and boring in eco mode.

Maybe use it if its an every day driver car, but my uncle only uses his for fun so keeps it in the sportier settings

I quite like the eco mode.... on my daily drive to work and back i have lots of long straights on slight hills where i can just take my foot off and roll for ages if im not in the mood to drive fast. maybe im just getting old lol :D

I took a Leon Cupra 280 out on a testdrive yesterday afternoon as SWMBO is potentially interested in one to eventually replace our Fabia.

Had mixed feelings about it. Performance didn't exactly blow me away. It's quicker than our Fabia vRS obviously, but felt waaay down on pace compared to the M135i.

The lack of decent noise was the biggest disappointment. I was standing outside when the sales guy started it up and I couldn't hear even a trace of exhaust rasp or burble. On the move in comfort mode the engine is hushed and silent which is fine but in Cupra mode you are listening to a nasty very obviously fake tone. Not good.

On the plus side ride and refinement were good and I liked the adaptive dampers. Steering was very good for a FWD car and didn't have any traction issues although the road was bone dry so not a good test to be fair.

I wasn't a massive fan of the interior quality and the ex-demo car I drove already had a few rattles.

Interior space and practicality were good and I really liked the styling of the 19" wheels. Boot is also a decent size/shape on the hatch.

I wanted to like it more but sadly it didn't light my fire as a performance car. Have said that I think SWMBO would probably really like it and would suit her in terms of size, pace and practicality.

Just waiting for the sales guy to get back to me with a deal/quote inc a trade-in price on our vRS (will be interesting lol!). Unless it's the deal-of-the-century though I don't think there is much chance of us getting one and we will stick with the Furby for now. Looking forward to trying out a Golf R next....

They toys hold the engine back a lot, turn the traction off and it pulls much better. Even without the light flickering it really holds the car back if the rubber aint up to the job (which the stock bridgestones aint). I've now turned down the fake noise in mine and it sounds much better, but a bit quiet still. Exhaust farts are great though :D On startup and just cruising it is very quiet outside, they prob made it a little too quiet.

Not had any rattles in mine yet, feel very solid... nothing like my fabia which rattled ALL the time.

Golf R will be a hoot though, so enjoy thrashing that around :D

Interesting Tom. Agree the noise is pants, so you'll hate it in the golf! I doubt you'll find it any quicker either, unless you're on a suicide mission. Interior is tolerable, but the steering is utter rubbish. Devoid of real feel and feedback, that's electronic assistance for you. Surprised it felt that much slower than the beemer, it's not the usual reaction. It does have 20 bhp and 50lb/ft advantage. Mr Shark can quickly more than redress that mind you :)

Yeah I agree the golf may not feel much quicker (in the dry at least). To be fair the out and out pace isn't all-important as SWMBO will mainly be driving it so I wouldn't really bother with a map lol.

The M135i is 326bhp so a 46bhp advantage over the Cupra? The extra torque was quite noticeable.

If I hadn't jumped into it straight out of the M135i I think I might have liked it more. Maybe a back-to-back test with the Fabia would have given me a different perspective, as it would be intended to replace the vRS afterall. I think in all honesty I have been completely spoiled by the M135i. Especially so now it has the performance exhaust fitted! ;-)

Yep I did hear a few farts on upshift with the DSG which was nice. Totally agree about the outside noise. It's the most sporty car in the range of a 'sporty' brand so you'd have hoped they would have provided it with abit better external soundtrack. The sales manager at my local dealer has a Cupra ST 280. As I was leaving the dealership he was driving out in it. He nailed the throttle up the road but I just couldn't hear any nice exhaust paaaarp/rasp at all :-(

If I got one I'd be googling aftermarket exhausts all the time lol

Just a little noise taster for your ears Tom (as std)

Also a little enhancement, if that's what floats your boat .( RE: your M135i recent modified non-std noise) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsSFK_4BnEA

^quite like that Milltek :-)

That's the whole point of the leon imo. I never get blocked baulked, raced, flipped etc no matter what pace I drive at.

Already discussed in the golf R thread!..................& has been pointed out that the Seat can be had from £25K & that it will upset a few other hot hatch owners.........well M135I is 8mins 8 secs, has less room, costs way more to tax/insure & outlay etc..............

Also of note is the new Audi Sport TTCup racer which is FWD only & has the 4cy 2lt engine from the TTS road car (not the 2.5lt) with 306bhp plus 29bhp additional push to pass, & the same front end drivetrain & front part haldex unit from the Golf R. also has the TTS S-tronic DSG with altered ratios, & the suspension is the same, bar racing spring/dampers & uniball joints (which I bet are the rear ones on the front wishbone).

This MQB package with multilink suspension, 2lt engine etc is a very good design from VAG, at last they have hard facts to prove it now from 3rd parties.............

Re exhaust noise I notice the Seat estate ST Cupra has one oval each side which I like, unlike the R estate........... :wall: .........

That said not all purchase are made in purely on list price and lap times.

The seat is nice tho and has a great party trick of that brilliant time. People just need to decide if it ticks the other boxes they require

Like most modern cars, the tyres are too fat / too much grip, but the chassis is brilliant. The more I drive it the more I realise just how classy it is, but it requires daft speeds to find the limits.

The hatch also has twin oval tailpipes by the way. I'd prefer the less obvious simple straight tube pipes, that don't get dirty / marked like this chromed finishers do. Mine looks terrible, and is a pig to keep clean.
