Columbus sat nav.

Featured Replies

Please can someone with more Knowledge than me tell me if its possible to fit a rns 510 to a 2005 Octavia L@K.

Thanks in Anticipation,

Ken.

Plenty of threads on here on that one.

It will physically fit but you will need a new trim. Assuming you wish to match the trim in the car, they are cheaper or dearer.   £10 to £70.

You will need the code for the Columbus as they are called in Skoda speak.

There is likely to be a problem with the CAN gateway in your age car.  This will cause your battery to discharge overnight.  You can replace the gateway with a later model and all should be fine.   £80ish

EddieNL, member on here, over in Yarmouth deals with these sorts of things and will doubtless get you sorted.

Hi

I did this for my 2006 L&K

The important choice is:

1. Get an older version software on the Columbus, this will avoid the battery drain issue and makes it plug and play, I did not even need to get the maxidot coded although not all of the steering wheel controls worked. But the nav symbols did appear in the maxidot no problem.

2. Get a new unit and then get the CANBUS updated. You will get a bit more functionality from the new software on the Columbus unit and I think the climate control etc. changes will be displayed on the unit?

I think I am right in saying that either of the above options you will loose the parking optical display but I retained the 'beeps' so lived with it

I think I had something like version B of the Columbus software but am sure someone will more knowledge will advise, or search the site as loads of people have done this

Hope that helps

Yes.

But you'll either need a modified firmware for older cars. Or physically update the CAN gateway to a newer one.

Hi,

The unit which I purchased secondhand is a Columbus with numbers 3T0 035 680 A      HW:H42    SW:2724  if this means anything to anyone.

Glad for any info regarding age etc.

KenB.

Yes. You can put a modified firmware on there to avoid battery drain or upgrade your gateway.

There is certainly a 3810 firmware and probably a 4020 firmware modified as well. Look for ones that avoid battery drain. Try 'My GTI' website for reliable links.

As you'll almost certainly want to upgrade the firmware to get 7-digit postcodes and more recent maps, I'd go with the firmware route.

There's nothing for you to gain by going beyond 4120 if you choose the gateway and non-modified firmware route.

If you want a gateway, I've got one in the 'For Sale' section.

Has anyone updated the 3T0 035 680 A to 3810 or 4020 successfully only I've just read it's not advisable to update the A series because it can cause problems.

Any information on this would be gratefully appreciated.

KenB.

Its older revision A units that that applies to, not part numbers with A at the end (confusing I know). Your unit is much newer, and can go to 4020 safely (or to 4120 with an updated gateway). In fact I have a revision A and took it 4020 with little trouble anyway.

Thanks for reply I was beginning to think I'd been sold an old model .I connected power to the unit today and was asked to insert the navigation disc I never had a disc with it what do you suggest I do? Is this normal I thought the maps were on the internal hard drive or is this a different disc?

KenB.

If it's asking you to insert a nav disc then it's possible that the unit is faulty. Someone else bought a nearly new one on here a couple of weeks ago (from Ebay, not here) and it was doing the same thing. He's just sent it back for a replacement. Who or where did you get the unit from?

I bought it from a s/hand car spares company online. Has anyone else heard of this problem and if there is an easier solution than sending it back for a refund

I would appreciate any help from other members or constructive comments,

KenB.

It will also say that if no map is installed (which can be the result of the software update).  Was the map version mentioned in the sale ad??

  • Author

no mention was made of map version. How can that be easily verified? I would obviously have to buy maps to test this out. Is there any kind person in the Cambridgeshire area able to help an elderly person out, I would be prepared to pay any expenses.

KenB.

It should have been sold with maps on it. It might have been and its something else but worth ruling out missing maps. Can you copy music to the hard drive and play it happily?

I've had it a few times. Sometimes it's cured by reloading the firmware, and other times it's possible to just reinstall the maps(although in your case it's not possible because they didn't supply you with a maps disc), and sometimes it means the seller sold you a broken unit, usually by cutting the wires of the quadlock and shorting something instead of unclipping it and removing it carefully. Car breakers are sometimes not right clever.

If you want to try loading some maps onto it, let me know and I'll sort you some.

It's difficult to know how far to go and how long to leave it before sending it back and as far as I know there's no way apart fro m what you have suggested. The problem is I could be accused of causing the problem myself. It's very kind of your offer of maps I think its worth trying if you don't mind as trying to get a refund is like trying to get blood out of a stone with car dealers. I'm not sure of the rules regarding giving out Email addresses perhaps you will advise.

KenB.

If you bought it through Ebay, contact the seller and say there's a problem and there are no maps on it. As you've then made them aware of the issue you've covered yourself initially. Wait til they creturn contact and see what they say. Invariably it'll be "It was okay when we removed it!" at which point you argue that it's not relevant how it was when it was removed. It was delivered to you with a problem and you want a resolution. At that point I would take a video of you showing the unit being connected to your car (serial number of the item) then turn it on and show it asking for the maps disc, and post it on Ebay messages (don't even think about phone calls or messages outside of ebay). There's no argument then that the unit is faulty irrespective of what they say. Then you can negotiate and say you're prepared to get a maps disc and try installing it if they agree, and work on it from there. If you're sensible with them and try to come to an agreement then they should play the game, and if not then raise a case with ebay and take it through them. They will side with you and you'll be allowed to return it no doubt. They like buyers to be happy, and the seller in this case clearly will need to sort it out to your satisfaction.

If you want a set of maps, send me a Personal Message (hold your mouse over my name at the side of this post and then click "Send message").

I did. You can go to 4120; after that there's nothing to gain.

Ken,

Definitely worth a try if it is as good as you say, nothing to lose.

I have been speaking to Skoda Technician regarding this and he said that if the unit has been off supply for a long period, which is possible they can lose maps and firmware etc. This seems possible to me does anyone have any thoughts on this theory?

KenB.

Sounds very unlikely to me. What you are essentially talking about is self deleting files as the unit is not connected to the web in any way!

Thanks for responding, I'm clutching at straws really over this and just hoping I can solve the problem and get the unit up and working , so I am keen to hear any offers of assistance and suggestions which you may have.

Regards,

Ken

P.S. Countryboy mentioned your name as being an expert on these units.
