Flashing Red Oil Warning Light Again

Featured Replies

Right guys, drove home from work this afternoon (in a rather spirited but legal manner), had to go and run a few erronds when I got back into town so had to do a few stop start trips. On the last trip I pulled off rather quickly and then had to come to an abrupt stop for a traffic light change. Set off again and I got the red oil warning light flashing at me. Pulled over immediately and stopped the car to check oil level, look for major leaks etc and could see nothing.

Got back in car and started the engine. Car ran fine, nice and smooth with no light. Set off very carefully and all seemed well. after a few more gentle stops and starts at traffic lights it came on again so I limped the car home.

Scanned with pc and got the following error code:

16395 P0011  - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)

Now the car had the oil pickup changed less than 18 months ago and has had 3 oil changes since so I am thinking that it is unlikely to be the pickup again. The car also still runs very smooth with no rattles or noises.

I cleared the codes and took the car to my friends garage which is less than 5 mins drive away. He has advised me that it is likely to be the oil pressure switch and that he has had the same issue with other cars. Does this sounds likely?

Its going in on Monday to potentially have the switch changed as its a quick and cheap job. I have also asked him to do another oil change and also to flush it to be sure. Is this the right thing to do?

Regards

Anybody?

Cars going in the garage on Monday and need to pick parts up today.

If when the pickup was changed, too sump sealant was used it can end up blocking up the oil pickup.....

But I would go with the oil pressure switch first, if that doesn't cure it then maybe consider my suggestion.

Check out the oil pressure no less than 2bar at 2000 rpm at 80 degrees. Irrc that fault code sounds like the inlet camshaft timing is too advanced. ..get that checked as well asap.

Camcover off to check!

Just wondering how you got on with this issue. I've had the car out for a good run today as it's been doing a lot of short trips lately. Cars running fine sounds fine but half way home got the flashing red oil light. Oil level is ok.

Turned the engine off then back on and the oil light has gone off but i havnt been back out in it yet so i suspect it'll come back on. I'm thinking the oil pick up pipe might need changing.

P/N i have:

Oil pick up pipe - S06A115251

O-ring - N0282222

Sealant- D176404A2

Can anyone confirm?

I would do that as a matter of urgency and not drive it!

Yeah i was about 5 miles from home when it came on so i hope everything is ok. I came off a rounabout and just revved it through a little for an overtake then seen the light. My heart sank!

What oil are you using out of interest?

5w30 quantum. Have been for quite a few years now. I did have an oil pressure problem about a year into ownership. On that occasion it went into my main dealer and had a new oil pump and pick up changed but that will have been 6 years ago now. Its had regular oil changes since then though.

Quick update guys. Since my last post ive had the sump off and checked oil pickup which was clean as a whistle. Yesterday I changed the oil presure sensor and did oil and filter change. Took the car for a good run today and all was fine throughout the day until I was faced with the red flashing oil light again about 2 miles from home after a very spririted drive along a dual carriage way. Car still runs smooth apart from I am getting a rather strange noise on cold start which goes away completely after a minute or two of running.

See video HERE

Starting to think its the Timing Chain Tensioner (or Camshaft Adjustment Valve as its called on Ross Tech site) but hoping someone could confirm before I through any more money away on stuff it doesnt need.

I really would get an oil pressure gauge on the engine. It is possible you have a duff oil pump which is losing pressure when the oil is very hot.

Agree with this, but while in that area would strip out oil pressure relief valve to make sure it is not gummed up, before plumping for a pump.

The noise on cold start will most likely be a failing SAI or one of the SAI pipes has a hole in it., very common part to fail. its meant to add extra air into the exhaust to help warm the cat up faster due to emissions. The SAI only runs for 1 or 2 mins following a cold start then switches off.

When it fails many on here simply remove the whole thing, but it needs to be mapped out to avoid the CEL coming on once removed.

This may explain my flashing oil light. OMG i was totally shocked when i seen this. Bits of sealant which believe it or not was from my skoda main dealer fixing the last oil pressure issue. Bits of broken dipstick as well. I'm surprised i had any oil pressure at all with all that lot stuck in there. I wasn't gonna bother doing the strainer either wasn't sure it'd be worth it!! Just goes to show you never know.

Good idea having these strainers fitted though god knows what issues all this lot would've caused.

Yikes!

Yikes!

Yikes indeed! Shocking really.

Nasty. I blew up a Mk2 Golf GTI due to a blocked strainer. The oil light only came on after 40 miles on the M5 at a continuous 75 mph. The oil pressure was checked at a VW garage and was normal, but by then the light had gone off as the crap that was in the bottom of the sump had dropped off the strainer. The garage said it was alright so I carried on, red light again, then very nasty loud noises. Had to drive 20 miles to Cornwall at 10 mph, then was taken back on a transporter. Went to drive it to the garage the next day and put a rod through the crankcase. The service history on the motor was very sketchy and obviously had not had oil changes very often. Even though I had changed the oil there was enough crap on the bottom of the sump to block the strainer when everything was nice and hot.

Yikes indeed! Shocking really.

Looks like a ashtray!

All OK now?

Just feels the same tbh which is amazing considering the state of that. Piece of mind is worth a lot though.

Definitely, lack of oil flow is a killer

Glad you fixed it before it's too late...

This is one of my 80k miles periodic check, fortunately never found it clogged...
