New engines/facelift

Recommended Posts

I think they'll eventually do away with the hatchback and just have the Spaceback.

in Southern Europe and elsewhere, there is a market resistance to hatches (ie Spaceback) and sedans sell better hence the existence of orion, jetta, belmont and other 3 box cars including the Fasa-Renault 7 (a 1st gen Renault 5 with a boot).

The saloon like styling of the Rapid Hatchback (limousin) is always going to appeal more in those markets.

New engines confirmed:

With the launch of the new ŠKODA Superb, the Czech car manufacturer will equip its complete model range in Europe with modern and environmentally friendly EU6 engines. Thus, from calendar week 22/2015, all ŠKODA models – from the Citigo to the new Superb – will be available with Volkswagen Group’s latest petrol engines of the production series EA 211/EA 888 or with EA 288 TDI common-rail diesel engines   including Stop-Start system and brake energy recovery.

The ŠKODA Yeti and Rapid model series will see the most important changes in terms of engine technology. The ŠKODA Rapid/Rapid Spaceback will be fitted with new EA211series 1.2 TSI petrol engines with more power: 66 or 81 kW (90 PS or 110 PS); a 92 kW (125 PS) 1.4 TSI petrol engine will also be available. The current entry-level three-cylinder 55 kW (75 PS) 1.2 MPI petrol engine will be discontinued. Completely new for the Rapid model series will also be the EA 288 diesel engines: the three-cylinder 66 kW (90 PS) 1.4 TDI and the four-cylinder 85 kW (116 PS) 1.6 TDI.

I am planning my next rapid already, although if the hatchback is done away with in favour of the spaceback, I will have to look elsewhere. I want leather upholstery, folding wing mirrors and standard 17 or 18 inch alloys. I would like the black glass roof and the golf 2 litre diesel. keep the hard suspension please and fit more reliable washer jets.... and drill the bloody holes for the number plates in line!

now that is surely not too much to ask of skoda is it?

You can probably order the leather seats through alibaba or similar.  The Shanghai VW Santana - on the same platform - has all leather seats and trim available.

Having perused the listed improvments, I cannot see any that will relieve the "grim" interior ambience, which is all is putting us off the Rapid, in favour of the new i20.

When Hyundai introduce the new 1.0 litre engine, that is.

Not sure about the i20, but I disliked the i30 interior so much last year it made my mind up to get a Rapid/Toledo.

Overstyled, confusing switchgear, and smelt strongly of cheap plastics.  I didn't even test drive it.

The elegance interior is available in pale colours - not grim at all?

Camelspyder,

I simply first sat in the new i20, inside the well lit showroom, and was very impressed with the interior Ambience.

It "felt" good.

Then i sat in a Rapid Spaceback, outside, and thought I had moved back 20 years, "grim" is simply the best descriptor i can use.

Now in respect of engineering integrity, better petrol engines (and diesel engines too) and driving experience, etc, the Skoda product may well be a better Car

But!

First impressions last!

You're bang on. I had a limited budget and had narrowed down the "brand new" options to heavily discounted i30, Rapid Connect or Toledo SE.

According to the motoring press the i30 is clearly the superior vehicle, yet first impressions of the interior shelved it immediately.

It's each to their own.

I looked at Hyundai (which I immediately rejected due to having the kerb appeal of a dustcart) and Kia (same company) back in 2013 and mistakenly bought the latter, a Sportage to be exact, as it looked like a stylish car... which I got rid of 10 months later as it was the most abominable vehicle I'd ever owned, poor performance, it felt cheap... probably the nastiest plastics I'd ever come across in a car, and without a doubt the most boring and lacklustre driving experience in my 32 years since I passed my test. Stepping back into Skoda was true pleasure!

I traded in an 18 month old Honda Civic to buy my Rapid. The Civic was like a spaceship inside. There were more lights and buttons than the USS Enterprise.

I much prefer the less fussy Rapid interior. There are lights where they need to be, everything is black which I like and there's plenty of storage space.

If this is going to be a 'facelifted' model then will it be externally as well? (apart from the indicators in the mirrors) I love the look of the car from the side and the back but head on something isn't quite right. A different grille would be nice (I've been told directly that the superskoda one won't be ready until the second half of the year) I had thought about chroming it up like the Superb on the fins of the moustache as it were

cough cough

Quite why anyone ever consider the Sportage as owt else but a "wannabe" car?

I cannot imagine.

I do actually follow the Prussian mantra "less is more", or "form follows function", or it bloody well should, if it warny for "focus" groups and VB's inane/insane influences.

Like I like the 30 odd year old "G" Wagen non designer-designed, design.

I agree with you there, the rapid doesn't have a pretty face.

I have considererd, but have been unable to confirm if something like a Polo 6r front end will fit the rapid space back.

It'll need lights, wings, bonnet, bumper and grill probably from a GTI or polo R at the breakers.

But a Polo R or GTI estate would be pretty cool.

Wouldn't dream of it until my warranty runs out though.

exactly how I felt when I sat in the new fabia Saturday (after parking the new i20 I picked up 2 hours earlier on the skoda forecourt )instant dislike, was out there helping son in law buy a new rapid

having the i20 and the fabia so close it was easier to compare, in the i20 feels more spacious and modern, fabia 3 seemed smaller, less leg room to provide bigger boot space. interior seemed older

if you could get the i20 with the VAG engines now that would be an interesting combination

Could it be the expected facelift

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRb4LOMLpiI&hd=1&html5=1

Yes.. it shows the indicators in the wing mirrors, new stereo and new dashpod.

This is being called a 'tech-lift' though with a full facelift due at some point later as there are no real cosmetic changes here.

SIlver and those alloys are nice together.  Check out the "Bentley" seats! but the new gauges look tacky - like a 2001 punto sporting.

However, Shiny Skoda and 70's porno soundtrack????

Not a likely combination IMO.

With old spec side indicators.

See the massively photoshopped arch gaps!!
