Can split console bush (MOT advisory) cause steering problems?

Featured Replies

Hi,

apologies firstly as I am not remotely mechanically minded but can a worn/split console bush cause steering issues i.e. the sense the steering is doing it's own thing when cornering - like it goes a bit light and you have to make a small correction sometimes? I got an advisory on my MOT in Jan re the console bush.

I did have a few years of hassle from a dodgy steering rack (2 failures of replacement rack done by Skoda franchise- eventually ended up getting it re-conditioned via a 3rd party through the franchise as it was over a year since the second failure) and it feels similar to the problems i experienced then - but the rack is not leaking so I'm making the assumption it is not that. The only other thing I haven't checked is whether it needs a bit more p/steering fluid. I wondered if the level could drop a little after being refilled following the re-conned s/rack being fitted (though this was in Jan 14 and this current steering issue is quite a recent thing).

I do need to get the console bush replaced anyway but if this could not explain the symptoms I mentioned I will need to ask the garage to further checks.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Not a great description of symptoms. Knackered console bushings can cause 'wandery' handling.

true, but had i thought of it 'wandery' would be a perfect description..thank you for the reply as it puts my mind at rest somewhat
