Erractic Running - 2014 Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 CR TDI 184 DPF

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a fault with the general running of my VRS which is driving me mad (!!!!!) and which my local Skoda dealer seems unable to diagnose despite two visits to them.

When drivng my vehicle day to day I am finding that when backing off the accelerator that the engine momentarily races - imagine blipping the throttle, causing the car to jolt.  When this happen you can see the rev counter move by around 250 rpm.  The rev counter then drops as you would expect it to when backing off of the accelerator.  The fault occurs whether the engine is cold, warm or hot and always in the rev band between 1500 and 2500 rpm.

The fault does not occur all of the time -- it is evident on perhaps 85% of journeys, and of course each time I take it into the dealer it never reoccurs.

A check of the ECU for any fault codes by the dealer shows nothing and the software is the latest issue.

The problem is really spoiling my enjoyment of the car as you can understand but the dealer is telling me that they can do nothing to help unless they have actually witnessed the fault themselves which in fairness I can understand to some degree.  My feeling however is that they only way anyone is going to find the fault - which appears intermittent in nature, is if they fit what I would think of as a data logger to the car.

In my work world - i work for an instrumentation company, such a device would log and record the outputs of the different sensor on the engine - throttle position sensor output voltage, coolant temperature sensor output voltage etc and would compare the values with what should be the theoretical correct values under specific running conditions.  The dealer tells me that no such thing exists but I know that Audi, Ford and a number of other manufacturers do have such systems - are they just called something else, a diagnostic computer perhaps or something along these lines???

Can anyone help me out with what might be going on here and the best way to deal with the problem with my dealer - the car is still under warranty??

Thanks

Jez

I forgot to mention that the car has only done 16,000 miles.

If you have access to VCDS the you could use the measure blocks feature to record the data you require.  If you do not own VCDS, there is a VCDS owners map if you do a quick forum search; someone may help you out for a few . I am in Andover if that is any help.

There was a thread about something similar (I am trying to find it) that sounds like your issue.

IIRC correctly it was thought to be an emissions based thing and not a fault.

I'll keep looking and hopefully the other thread.

Edit:

Found it! http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/337285-throttle-flat-spot-issues/

Moving to the Octavia III section which I think it belongs in?  Not a mks 2 is it?

I've got roughly the same thing as you describe.

It happens if you have pushed the accelerator and boost is building up but then something ahead makes you take your foot off the throttle. i find this can give a slight surge which is annoying.

i've put it down to a slow reacting boost solenoid/wastegate that is not dumping the now, not required pressure and some is trickling back into the system somehow.

Hi All

Thanks for your comments.

Radders

The info on the VCDS could prove very useful in the future.  There has been a development however - see below.

Meb

Thanks for digging back through the old posts and finding just the info I needed.  I suspect it would have taken me hours to find this.

Steve

Again thanks for confirming that you also have the same issue.

Devonutopia

Thanks for moving this post to the right section for me - not its not a MK2.

Update

After reading the threads in Mebs message last week I called Skoda customer service directly express my frustration that the fault on my car still persists despite two visits to my local dealer.  I pointed out that despite being told that there are no other recorded incidences of the problem on the Skoda database that a number of other VRS owners on the forum were also experiencing exactly the same issue.  I suggested that they keep my car until they can replicate the cough / hicup / blipping which should not take too long - it is happening on vitually every trip now.  The service manager at the dealership called me back after I had finised talking to Skoda CS and we have agreed that my car we go into the dealer next Monday for a week of testing.

I will let you know the outcome of the testing and fault finding is as I am sure that we all want this issue fixed!!!!

Jez

Not a problem.

Sounds promising though! Hope they work it out :)
