HID conversion

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Looking to do a HID conversion. So got a couple questions.

What HID kit do people suggest?

Where have people stuck the ballast?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure they do them for dual filament too, they'll be a different code though obviously. Try searching "Eric the car guy HID" or something similar on YouTube. I'm pretty sure he did a video o

Mines just a set off ebay was £30 6000k bulbs. the ballasts come with some 3m double sided tape so mine are stuck to the side of the engine bay with that works a treat. I would try find somewhere metal to stick to because they do get hot.

If you don't have projectors then they do make kits designed for reflector headlights now. You'd be looking for H7R bulbs rather than just H7

Don't suppose you could get a picture just to show?

Mines a 53 plate vrs so not 100% sure. How would I find out?

Thanks for the heads up![emoji106]

I take it these are only available for replacing single element bulbs?

So what are the current h7 headlight bulbs then in my 53 plate vrs. And what kits should I be looking for? Or do I need to change the whole unit before being able to get HIDS? Just don't wanna be a "tool blinding others" [emoji1]

To do it properly you need the depo headlights and some d2s hids, or you could retrofit a mini h1 projector from theretrofitsource.com into your standard headlights. Any other way is a huge bodge and you WILL blind people

The best way to do it is to buy projector style headlights. But the h7r kits do not blind people, they have a beam pattern much like standard bulbs unlike h7 kits which just throw light out all over the place.

I've had one of these new h7r kits for about 6 months (mainly because I didn't fancy paying the money for projectors) and haven't been flashed by anyone, even tested it with people I know when I fist fitted them and they said they were fine. They do have to be properly adjusted though

How does the layman who is only impacted by them know the difference out of interest?

They tend to be on a scale of only very midly to extremely annoying but I wouldn't tell OEM poorly designed from aftermarket illegal.

Although video feeds like this have gone a bit of a way to dispell some of my misunderstanding of it.

A vast quantity of HID's annoy from my personal experience, and the fact you are lumped in as owning a light technology is generally a cause of misery for motorists is enough for me not to want to have them, or certainly pay damn good money for them.

The enhanced output halogen bulbs do fine for what little low light condition driving I do, and I don't really follow this "need to be noticed" or go one better than the joneses whcih you'd normally associate with the merc/bmw lot.

Why is anyone even still selling the illegal crap anyway? Just buy a proper legal kit, its not worth the question given how bad a lot of HIDs are.

I'm not wanting to do a HID conversion to "be noticed" or be associated with the merc and BMW lot. I'm wanting to do it as most of my driving is done at night. Therefor I'd like a HID conversion to get stronger brighter lights to improve my visibility. Especially being out in the countryside most road lights are turned off.

That's why I am asking for other people's opinions who have done it and to see what kits they used.

I was also going to do the hid conversion thanks for the advice about the h7r but what Blubs are you running for the main/full beam ??

For the main beam I'm using osram nightbreaker + filament bulbs because they had very good reviews and perform very well. They don't march the colour of my HIDs but it doesn't matter as nobody else sees them.

The video in the link above is refering to the h7 style HID kits, I agree they are awful and do indeed blind other drivers when fitted to reflector headlights however the h7r kits didn't exist when that video was made so the info is a little outdated.

Well, at that rate the quickest and cheapest way to get started with a Furbie is Osram Nightbreaker+ quartz-xenon filament bulbs, although I'd agree soul snatcher24's point about the new H7R plasma discharge kits making even better dips (and if they're designed to put the discharge arc in the same place as an H7 filament they should give you a correctly shaped beam so no dazzle).

Just buy a proper legal kit, its not worth the question given how bad a lot of HIDs are.

Because there aren't any. The way out of date Road Traffic Act does not make any provision for anything other than filament bulbs, with the only exception being EU type approval on factory fitted kits.

If I'm honest all I want is a colour match as you don't need your main beam with hids anyway coz there at bright but it's just if you flash to let people in and I will be running 8000k hids

You'll still need full beams as the HIDs should have the same beam pattern as your current lights, if they're any higher they'll be blinding people.

As there has been so many things suggested what am I actually meant to do?

Buy a h7r kit for the standard headlights?

Fit a projector to my headlight unit and buy a h7 kit?

Or something else?

Why 8000k (anything over 5000k) is a bad idea has been done to death between here and the Octy 1 forum.

Personally I'd just buy Osram Nightbreaker+ .

The standard xenon projectors take d2s bulbs

Coz I'm a little chavy and my car is blue and with a slight blue colour to the Blubs is the look I want I was planing on buying h7r canbus free kit off ebay but the main beam is separate to the dipped beam Id like both to match without takeing the main bulb out and buying a bixenon

I've had Phillips and osram and for the price they're a waste
