oil level woes

Featured Replies

What's the max on the dip stick? I've read it's the top curved bit but I've checked mine and it's a couple of inches from the plastic yellow lug thing on the dip stick.. there's no excess smoke or anything..

Also oil is very very thin so I think I'm due a change which will be done next week as the engine is a bit tippy as well

Cheers

56 vrs forgot to mention

Between the curv is dots of lines, the top of that is the max. A lot of people fill to the top of the curve bit which I havnt noticed do any damage but doesn't make it right.

I'd never noticed the first bullet-point in the ! Caution section before, so much for me thinking I knew what was in the manual! :D

I only changed the oil on Saturday too, wonder if I put the right amount in (ever!)?

Thanks... wish I'd of gotten the manual with mine!

Wonder why I ain't smoking like hell then mines a lot higher than the top curve

Level in mine.... puzzling though cos if I was that over I'd be smoking like a you.know what!

Must be something not right, wrong dipstick perhaps?

Or diesel getting into your engine oil?

You say the oil is thin, does it smell like diesel is mixed in with it?

Is car running ok otherwise?

  • Author

Car runs fine not sure on dipstick if someone could measure the length of theirs for me it would be great...

Can't smell diesil in the oil, it's possibly thin because it hasn't been changed in that long... I've had it since November and only just checked levels (crap memory)

Just got another opinion on smell and they reckon the oil smells like diesil

Hopefully a leaky injector seal, but not unknown on the pd engine to be a cracked head.

The fuel rail as such is a cavity in the head on these.

Bosch injector kits are available for circa £10 per injector on the net, get a set of four banged on and a oil change, then keep an eye on your oil more often!!! :)

The thing you won't tell or notice is when the oil gets higher and gets sucked from the crank case breather and into the turbo, it will just keep revving itself unti it goes bang really...

Would the engine run any different to normal with a crack head?

Injector kits? Is this the injectors themselves?

  • Author

Nevermind I know what the kit is now I've thought about it...

FWIW, you can (officially) download an owner's manual here.

  • Author

Thanks... what the hell is FWIW? Lol

Just read the pd engines if they are running rich excess would run into the oil somehow? If this is true could a dodgy fuel temp sensor be a problem?

Thanks... what the hell is FWIW? Lol

Of course you don't need to believe the above, you could check up on you tube, quite dramatic and terminal.

I've saw videos of runaway diesel's before... not something I want happening.

Gonna drop the oil next week and fill up with fresh, possibly check for leaks even replace the injector seals if I can get them that day.. monitor it over a week and see how things go

I can only advise, but I wouldnt be hanging around till next week before changing it...

Can you even remove the sump plug and drain some out? That being the best of a bad job.

If it is what's been suggested about leaking diesel, oil viscosity will now be poor putting the whole engine at risk of wear and premature tuebo bearing failure.

or where the injectors and wedged in the head they wear the head its self there fore alloying diesel to mix with the oil

Getting done tomorrow along with the gti as that's screaming oil change at me every time I turn the key

Anyone got a guide to changing injector seals?

  • Author

Also does anyone know where I could get a seal kit from?

Not ebay though would need them that day otherwise it's a weeks delivery and I can't get them ordered till next week

The retaining bolts are stretch bolts, and going by the book should not be replaced.

Upto you though, I've done seals on my vrs and my bruvs van and reused the bolts :)
